What the label says to take, against what the formulary says
The Ayurvedic Formulary of India states a dose for 51 of the 101 entries transcribed here. On the 129 pages where a manufacturer's figure can be compared to it, 29 match exactly and 51 overlap. Patanjali Ayurved holds 11 of its 17 comparable pages at the formulary figure; Sitaram Ayurveda sits above it on 8 of 11. This compares published figures and judges no dose.
Disclosure, before anything else. This site is published by Age Ayurveda, which sells Ayurvedic products. None of our own products appear in this comparison, for a reason that counts against us rather than for us: we do not sell any of the classical preparations the formulary states a dose for, so there is no row of ours to put in the table. We take no money from any company named here, the comparison is organised by preparation rather than by brand, every figure is the manufacturer's own with the page it came from recorded, and there is no score and no winner. If a figure here is wrong we will correct it, including where the correction favours a competitor.
The Ayurvedic Formulary of India states a dose for the preparations it defines, and so does every manufacturer selling them. Nobody has put the two side by side. On the 129 product pages where they can be compared, across 27 preparations and 22 companies, 29 state the formulary figure exactly, 51 overlap it, 15 sit entirely above and 14 entirely below. A further 10 label ranges contain the formulary range, 5 sit inside it, and 5 meet it at a single value without overlapping at all.
What follows compares two published figures. It is not a safety assessment, it does not say any dose is wrong, and it cannot tell you what to take. A manufacturer may differ from the formulary for good reasons, and the formulary itself prefaces its doses as general guidance.
The thing worth knowing before any table
Most label doses cannot be compared to the formulary at all, and the reasons divide into one that is nobody’s fault and one that is a choice.
Of 260 product pages where the formulary entry and the label both stated an amount, only 132 were comparable and 128 were not. On 21 of those 128, the formulary’s figure is the weight of raw drug used to prepare a decoction while the label states the volume swallowed. Those are different quantities, and Dasamula Kvatha Curna is the clearest case: the formulary says 48 g, which is the coarse powder you boil, and a ready-made kashayam page saying 15 to 20 ml is not a smaller dose of the same thing. No comparison is drawn there, and that is a property of the formulary rather than a failing of the company.
On 83 pages the reason is different, and it is now by far the commonest one. The label counts tablets and never states what one tablet weighs. A company selling a classical preparation in tablet form, naming the formulary entry it follows, and never printing a milligram figure per tablet has published a product that cannot be checked against the standard it claims, by anyone, including a pharmacist. That is a disclosure choice rather than an accident of the formulary, and widening this survey from 7 companies to 22 did not dilute it: it grew from 24 pages to 83, which is 65% of everything that could not be compared.
A further 13 state only a household measure with no gram or millilitre equivalent of their own. Converting a teaspoon to grams would be our arithmetic rather than the manufacturer’s statement, so those are left uncompared too. 4 state no adult amount at all.
What the 129 comparable pages show
The pattern is per company, not per preparation, and it is visible because a house dose gives itself away: the same figure appears against preparations whose formulary doses differ.

Patanjali Ayurved states the formulary figure verbatim more often than any other company here. Eleven of its seventeen comparable pages give exactly the formulary range: 12 to 24 ml for Abhayarishta, Arjunarishta, Ashokarishta, Kutajarishta and Saraswatarishta, 1 to 3 g for Sitopaladi Churna, 3 to 6 g for Avipattikar Churna, 250 to 500 mg for Arogyavardhini Vati. This was not the expected result, and widening the survey from 7 companies to 22 did not displace it. It is the second time this project has found that the segment a company belongs to does not predict what it publishes.
Sitaram Ayurveda sits entirely above the formulary on 8 of its 11 pages, stating 25 to 30 ml for every one of its arishtas against a formulary figure of 12 to 24 ml for each. The uniformity is the point: several preparations with the same formulary dose and one house figure above it, applied consistently.
Shree Dhootapapeshwar states 5 to 10 g for its churnas, against formulary figures of 1 to 2 g for Hingvastaka, 1 to 3 g for Sitopaladi and 3 g for Talisadi. Its own label does the conversion for you and says so: “1 tsf. to 2 tsf. (5 to 10 gm.)”. So the house unit is the teaspoon and the gram figure is theirs, which is why these pages are comparable at all while the teaspoon-only pages of other companies are not.
The three largest contributors after Patanjali are companies no previous survey here had read. Tansukh Herbals, Shree Dhanwantri Herbals and Swadeshi Ayurved supply 38 of the 129 rows between them, and all three sit mostly in the overlapping band rather than at the formulary figure or far from it. Swadeshi Ayurved has no exact match on any of its 12 pages.
Kerala Ayurveda overlaps on five of six, stating 15 to 25 ml where the formulary says 12 to 24, and it is the only company in this set that publishes a separate children’s dose alongside the adult one on the same page.
Every compared page
Organised by preparation. The formulary figure is as printed, cited to part and entry. Each label figure is the company’s own, in the company’s own words, from the page recorded in the dataset.

The formulary recipe, and what each company publishes
A dose is only half of what makes a preparation the classical one. The other half is the recipe: which ingredients, which part of each plant, and in what proportion. For each preparation compared above, the recipe below is the Ayurvedic Formulary of India’s, as transcribed on this site and checked row by row against the printed book. The part abbreviations are the formulary’s own: Fr. fruit, Rt. root, Rz. rhizome, St. stem, St. Bk. stem bark, Lf. leaf, Fl. flower, Sd. seed, Pl. whole plant, Ht. Wd. heartwood, Exd. exudate, Ol. oil, P. pericarp.
Under each recipe is the product page of each company that the disclosure survey matched to this preparation, named by its address, and what that page publishes about its own composition: every ingredient with its quantity, a list without quantities, or no list at all. Only where a company publishes quantities can a reader check its product against the recipe, and the link goes to the page where that check can be made. We do not restate any company’s ingredient list, and nothing here says that a product does or does not follow the formulary. Some of those pages are for a different product sold under the same classical name, an oil or a syrup for instance, which the page address shows. A company may also follow a different classical version of the same preparation, and any judgement about a product needs its label in hand.

The disclosure survey did not cover this preparation.
27 recipes. Company pages were read on the dates recorded in the disclosure dataset.
What was withheld, and why
Three of the 132 comparable claims were refused by the adversarial check and are not in the table above. All three would have been wrong in print.
The first compared a Saraswatarishta figure of 3 to 12 ml to the formulary’s 12 to 24 ml. The check found that 3 to 12 ml is exactly the range Kerala Ayurveda publishes as its children’s dose for the same preparation, that the Maharishi page states no population at all, and that a second Maharishi page for the same preparation gives a different figure again. Treating it as an adult dose was unsupported, so no relation is published for it.
The second compared a Sitopaladi Churna figure of 3 to 6 g to the formulary’s 1 to 3 g. The label states that amount as a daily total while the formulary figure is per administration, so the two are not the same measure. Taken twice daily the label’s figure sits inside the formulary range; taken once it sits above it, and the page does not say which.
The third concerned Curoveda Herbals and is a different kind of error. Its Triphala Churna states 1 to 3 g against a formulary 3 to 6 g, and the comparison had called that “overlapping”. The two ranges share only the single value 3; every other amount on the label lies below the formulary minimum. The check refused the word rather than the numbers.
All three are published here rather than quietly dropped, because the count of what a measurement refused to say is part of what the measurement is worth.
How the relation is decided, after the third refusal changed it
That third refusal was about vocabulary, and checking how far it reached found the problem was not confined to one row: of 71 rows then labelled “overlapping”, nine shared exactly one value with the formulary range, and several were not overlap at all but containment. A label stating 125 mg against a formulary range of 125 to 250 mg sits inside it.
So the relation is no longer judged. Reading an amount out of a sentence is a judgement and is still done one preparation at a time; comparing two numeric ranges is arithmetic, and is now computed from the two figures after converting both to a common unit. That gives eight relations instead of four, which is what the data actually contains: identical, within, contains, overlapping, touching above, touching below, entirely above, entirely below.
The two methods disagreed on 20 of the 129 published rows, and the arithmetic is published in every case. The disagreements are in the dataset so they can be checked rather than taken on trust.
One of them went the other way and is worth recording, because it is the only case where the arithmetic was wrong and the judgement pass was right. Hind Herbal Pharmacy states 2 to 5 g for Arogyavardhini Vati against a formulary 250 to 500 mg. The first version of the arithmetic compared the bare numbers and concluded the label sat entirely below the formulary. It is eight to ten times above it. The agent had read the units and the arithmetic had not, and the row now converts both sides before comparing and refuses to compare a mass against a volume at all.
What this does not measure
It does not measure whether any dose is correct, safe, or appropriate for any person. It does not measure the strength of any preparation, which can differ legitimately between manufacturers and would change what a given volume contains. It covers only preparations where the formulary states a dose and where the manufacturer states one in a comparable form, which is 129 pages: a small fraction of what these companies sell. It reads product pages and not labels, and a printed label may state something the website does not.
And the coverage is limited by our own instrument, not only by what companies publish. Products
are found by matching the 101 formulary names against a product page’s URL, so a company selling
Abhayarishta at /product/12345 is invisible to it. That is measured rather than assumed: of 53
surveyed hosts whose URLs named no formulary preparation at all, 34 could be sampled further, and on
7 of those 34 a page title named a preparation the URL did not. Lama Pharmaceuticals sells
Sariwadyasav and Triphala Guggulu, Everest Ayurveda sells Amrutharishta, SKM sells Chyavanaprasham,
and none of those URLs say so.
So the right reading of a company’s absence from this page is “we did not find its formulary products”, never “it has none”. The miss rate is roughly one host in five, the full test is in /manufacturer-register.json’s companion check, and the regional spellings are a large part of why: Abhayarist, Sariwadyasav, Khadiradi Bati, Kanchnar Guggul.
And it rests on a transcription. The formulary figures come from this project’s own reading of the Ayurvedic Formulary of India, cited to part and entry so anyone can check them against the book.
Corrections
Widened 10 October 2026, and the earlier figures restated. This page first published 60 compared rows across 24 preparations and 7 companies. It now publishes 129 rows across 27 preparations and 22 companies, because the comparison was extended to the manufacturers in this project’s register rather than only the twenty companies of the original disclosure survey. 1,016 further product pages were read to do it.
Nothing in the first version was withdrawn as wrong. Every finding it reported survived the wider data: Patanjali Ayurved still states the formulary figure more often than anyone else, Sitaram Ayurveda still sits above it on almost every page, and the commonest reason a comparison cannot be made is still a tablet count with no weight stated, which grew from 24 pages to 83 and is now 65% of all the failures.
Two things did change. The relation between the two figures is now computed arithmetically rather than judged, which reclassified 20 of the published rows and is explained above. And the method section’s claim that 2 of 62 claims were withheld is now 3 of 132.
If you work for any company named here and a figure is wrong, out of date, or read from the wrong page of your site, write to us and we will correct it, including where the correction favours you over us. Every row carries the URL it was read from and your own wording as we found it, so it can be checked one page at a time. The whole comparison, including the two withheld claims, is published at /dose-comparison.json and /dose-comparison.csv. Details are on our corrections page.
Common questions
- How do Ayurvedic company doses compare with the Ayurvedic Formulary of India?
- On the 129 product pages where a manufacturer's dose can be compared with the formulary's, 29 state exactly the formulary figure and 51 overlap it; the rest sit entirely above or below it. Patanjali Ayurved holds 11 of its 17 comparable pages at the formulary figure. A difference is a fact about two published figures, not a finding that either dose is wrong.
- Does the Ayurvedic Formulary of India specify a dose?
- Yes, for most of its entries. It states a dose for 51 of the 101 entries transcribed on this site, usually as a range: 12 to 24 ml for an arishta, 1 to 2 g for Hingvastaka Churna, 250 to 500 mg for Arogyavardhini Vati. Part II prefaces its doses with the note that they are intended for general guidance, so the figure is a published standard rather than a limit.
- Do Ayurvedic manufacturers follow the formulary dose?
- Some state it exactly and some state a house dose instead. Of 60 product pages where the formulary figure and the label figure can be compared, 18 are identical to the formulary, 24 overlap it, 13 are entirely above it and 5 entirely below. The pattern is per company rather than per preparation: Patanjali Ayurved states the formulary figure on 11 of its 17 comparable pages, while Sitaram Ayurveda states 25 to 30 ml for every one of its six arishtas regardless of the formulary figure for each.
- Why can a label dose often not be compared to the formulary at all?
- Because the two do not always measure the same thing, and because many labels do not state an amount you can place. Of 118 pages where both the formulary and the label stated an amount, only 62 could be compared. The largest single reason, on 24 pages, is a label that counts tablets and never says what one tablet weighs, so there is no figure to set against a formulary dose in grams or milligrams. On a further 17 the formulary figure is the weight of raw drug used to prepare a decoction while the label states the volume swallowed, which is a different quantity entirely.
- Is a dose above the formulary figure unsafe?
- This page does not say that and cannot. The formulary dose is a published standard, not a safety ceiling, and a manufacturer may differ from it for legitimate reasons including a different preparation strength, a different indication, or modern clinical convention. What is recorded here is the relation between two published figures. Any question about what you should take is for a registered practitioner who knows your case.
- Which company states the formulary dose most often?
- Patanjali Ayurved, on 11 of its 17 comparable product pages, which is more than every classical pharmacy in this comparison combined. That was not the expected result and it is worth stating plainly, because it cuts against the assumption that the classical houses hold closer to the formulary than the mass-market brands do. It says nothing about the quality of anybody's preparation.
Where this comes from
- The formulary doses are from the transcriptions published on this site, each cited to Ayurvedic Formulary of India part and entry number, as printed.
- Every label figure is the manufacturer's own, read from its own product page on 9 and 10 October 2026, with the page URL recorded against it and the manufacturer's own wording quoted beside it. The full dataset is at /dose-comparison.json and /dose-comparison.csv.
- The amounts were read one preparation at a time rather than by pattern-matching the label text, because four successive attempts at the latter produced wrong figures about named companies. Every comparable verdict was then re-checked by a second adversarial pass that defaults to refusing, and 3 of 132 were withheld on it. All three withheld claims and the reasons are published.
- Where the formulary figure is the weight of drug used to prepare a decoction rather than the amount swallowed, no comparison is drawn. 21 label pages were set aside for that reason and it is a property of the formulary, not of the company.
- The relation between the two figures is arithmetic, so it is computed from the two ranges rather than judged, after converting both to a common unit. Nothing is compared across dimensions: a mass against a volume has no relation to state.
This page does make a new factual claim: the measurement above is this project's own, and nobody else published it. So it carries its method, its date and the source of every figure, and it names the page each figure was read from so that anyone it describes can check it one page at a time and tell us where we are wrong. The formulary compositions it compares against are not new, and are published with their sources on the pages they link to. See verification.
