pūrvakarma: what the term means and how it is translated
pūrvakarma पूर्वकर्म is an Ayurvedic technical term. It is rendered into English in 4 different ways, which is the reason this page exists: the renderings do not agree, and the difference between them changes what the term is taken to mean.

The entire course of medical treatment in connection with a disease may be grouped under three subheads, as the Preliminary measures (Purva-karma); the Principal therapeutical or surgical appliances (Pradhana-karma); and the After-measures (Paschat-karma).
Bhishagratna's rendering 'Preliminary measures'.
Not to be confused with
- pūrvarūpa
- Prodromal symptoms of a disease; shares the prefix pūrva but belongs to nidāna, not treatment.
- snehana / svedana
- These are the usual contents of pūrvakarma before panchakarma, but they are also stand-alone therapies (two of the ṣaḍ upakrama); pūrvakarma is the phase, not the technique.
- pradhānakarma
- The main procedure that pūrvakarma prepares for.
- paścātkarma
- Post-procedure phase; some authors describe saṁsarjana krama as paścātkarma of vamana/virechana.
Renderings that do not hold
- pre-operative care. Correct for Shalya, but the term equally covers panchakarma preparation (WHO 2022 and Bhishagratna both scope it to 'any major procedure' / 'the entire course of medical treatment').
- preliminary treatment. Suggests a lesser treatment given first; pūrvakarma is preparation for the main act, not an alternative treatment.
