## How it is translated, and whether the translation holds

Each rendering is given with the source that uses it. The assessment is ours.

### Preparatory procedures

WHO International Standard Terminologies on Ayurveda (2022) · ITA-9.2.4; description: 'Preparatory procedure carried out before proper administration of any major procedure such as panchakarma or surgery.' IAST: pūrvakarma · comparator-standard

Factual report. WHO places it under section 9.2 'Cleansing therapy'.

### preliminary actions

siva.sh machine-assisted gloss on Su.Su. 5.3 · https://www.siva.sh/sushruta-samhita/sutra-sthana/5/3 · web-gloss

Gloss only.

### pre-operative procedures / pre-procedure

Common textbook / web usage (easyayurveda, ayushdhara article surfaced in search) · textbook-usage · our paraphrase of the source, not its words

Widespread in Shalya and Panchakarma teaching; not traced to a quotable edition.

## The classical passages

### Sushruta Samhita Sutrasthana 5 (Agropaharaniya adhyaya):3 (as displayed on siva.sh; edition unstated). Bhishagratna's rendering of the same sentence is unnumbered., checked against the source

> त्रिविधं कर्म- पूर्वकर्म, प्रधानकर्म, पश्चात्कर्मेति; तद्व्याधिं प्रत्युपदेक्ष्यामः ॥३॥

tr. Sanskrit text (no translator) · https://www.siva.sh/sushruta-samhita/sutra-sthana/5/3

pūrvakarma is the first of the three phases of karma.

### Sushruta Samhita Sutrasthana V (Preliminary measures):Unnumbered in Bhishagratna; see siva.sh 5.3 for the Sanskrit sentence., checked against the source

> The entire course of medical treatment in connection with a disease may be grouped under three subheads, as the Preliminary measures (Purva-karma); the Principal therapeutical or surgical appliances (Pradhana-karma); and the After-measures (Paschat-karma).

tr. Kaviraj Kunja Lal Bhishagratna (1907) · https://www.wisdomlib.org/hinduism/book/sushruta-samhita-volume-1-sutrasthana/d/doc122892.html

Bhishagratna's rendering 'Preliminary measures'.

## Not to be confused with

- **pūrvarūpa.** Prodromal symptoms of a disease; shares the prefix pūrva but belongs to nidāna, not treatment.
- **snehana / svedana.** These are the usual contents of pūrvakarma before panchakarma, but they are also stand-alone therapies (two of the ṣaḍ upakrama); pūrvakarma is the phase, not the technique.
- **pradhānakarma.** The main procedure that pūrvakarma prepares for.
- **paścātkarma.** Post-procedure phase; some authors describe saṁsarjana krama as paścātkarma of vamana/virechana.

## Renderings that do not hold

- pre-operative care. Correct for Shalya, but the term equally covers panchakarma preparation (WHO 2022 and Bhishagratna both scope it to 'any major procedure' / 'the entire course of medical treatment').
- preliminary treatment. Suggests a lesser treatment given first; pūrvakarma is preparation for the main act, not an alternative treatment.

## Open questions

Recorded rather than resolved.

- Sanskrit edition behind siva.sh verse numbering.
- Whether Charaka's Kalpa/Siddhi sthāna uses the compound pūrvakarma (carakasamhitaonline Kalpana Siddhi page did not formally delineate the three terms when fetched).
