cleansing (cathartic); purifying remedies; 'cleansed (Sodhana)'

Bhishagratna, Sushruta Samhita, Su. ch. XXXIX title and Chi. ch. XXVII · wisdomlib doc141669 and doc142939 · public-domain-translation

'cathartic' narrows to purgation; 'cleansing/purifying' are his general terms.

correctives; corrective processes; 'Sançodhanam' or correction; purifying or corrective medicines; cleansers of all impurities

Kaviratna, Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana Lessons XV, XVI, XXII · archive.org OCR (his 17 in Lesson XVI; his 18 in Lesson XXII; footnote in Lesson XV) · public-domain-translation

'correction/correctives' is Kaviratna's consistent and now-obsolete rendering.

dōṣāḥ kadācit kupyanti jitā laṅghanapācanaiḥ| jitāḥ saṁśōdhanairyē tu na tēṣāṁ punarudbhavaḥ

tr. Sanskrit text (IAST as displayed) · source

Doṣas removed by saṁśodhana do not recur; the core claim distinguishing śodhana from reductive/pacifying measures.

Charaka SamhitaSutrasthana Lesson XVI:Kaviratna's printed 17 (standard 20) · checked against the source

The faults of the system, if subjugated by fasts and Pachanas, may reappear. If subjugated by correctives, they cannot reappear.

tr. Avinash Chandra Kaviratna (OCR text; spacing normalized) · source

Kaviratna renders saṁśodhana as 'correctives'.

Charaka SamhitaSutrasthana 22 (Laṅghanabṛṁhaṇīya):18 (carakasamhitaonline, Trikamji numbering ||१८||); Kaviratna prints 16 (printed '§16' after the passage on his p. 245, Lesson XXII, archive.org leaf 347), two behind the standard numbers across that page (his 10-16 = Trikamji 12-18) · checked against the source

चतुष्प्रकारा संशुद्धिः पिपासा मारुतातपौ। पाचनान्युपवासश्च व्यायामश्चेति लङ्घनम्॥१८॥

Charaka counts a fourfold saṁśuddhi (purification) among the ten laṅghanas; the Sanskrit does not name the four, so any list of them is gloss.

Charaka SamhitaSutrasthana Lesson XXII:Kaviratna's printed aphorism 16 (number printed after the passage, '§16', on his p. 245, archive.org leaf 347) = standard Sutrasthana 22/18 (Trikamji). He runs two behind across this page: his 10-16 = Trikamji 12-18. · checked against the source

The four kinds of corrective processes (viz., administration of emetics, of purgatives, of errhines or cerebral purgatives, and dry enemata), as also bearing thirst and wind and the heat of the Sun, drinking the medicines called Pāchana, fast, and physical exercise,—these are all included under Langhana.

tr. Avinash Chandra Kaviratna (OCR text; spacing normalized) · source

Kaviratna's rendering; the parenthetical naming of the four (emetics, purgatives, errhines, 'dry enemata' = niruha) is his gloss, not in the Sanskrit of 22.18.

Sushruta SamhitaChikitsasthana XXVII:Unnumbered in Bhishagratna · checked against the source

A person whose system has not been (previously) cleansed (Sodhana) with the proper purifying remedies (emetics and purgatives) should not, in any case, have recourse to such tonics inasmuch as they would fail to produce the wished-for result, just as the application of a dye to a piece of dirty cloth will prove non-effective.

tr. Kaviraj Kunja Lal Bhishagratna (1911) · source

Śodhana as prerequisite to rasāyana; Bhishagratna's 'cleansed (Sodhana)'.

Sushruta SamhitaSutrasthana XXXIX (Saṁśodhana-saṁśamanīya):Chapter opening, unnumbered · checked against the source

Now we shall discourse on the Chapter which treats of medicinal drugs possessed of cleansing (cathartic; or soothing effects (Samshodhana-Samsha-maniya-adhyaya).

tr. Kaviraj Kunja Lal Bhishagratna (1907) · source

Bhishagratna pairs saṁśodhana/saṁśamana as cleansing (cathartic) vs soothing; the chapter's śodhana sections are emetics, purgatives and errhines.

Vāgbhaṭa's definition: śodhana expels doṣas outward and is fivefold.

The concept record for this term

A term entry answers what the word means. It does not answer whether the thing the word names is settled, and often it is not. That is what the concept record is for: it sets out the questions on which the sources disagree about this term, with each position attributed, and states what is not established.

Not to be confused with

śamana
Pacifies doṣas without expelling them; the standard contrast (AH Su. 1 and 14; Charaka Su. 16.20 for the recurrence argument).
pañcakarma
The five named śodhana procedures; śodhana is the principle (WHO ITA-9.2.1), pañcakarma one enumeration (WHO ITA-9.2.2 lists two enemas and no bloodletting; Charaka Su. 22.18 counts four saṁśuddhi; Sushruta's tradition counts raktamokṣaṇa).
śodhana (rasaśāstra, pharmaceutical)
Purification/processing of drugs and minerals (WHO ITA-7.2.1.3; NIA RS0211); same word, different domain.
vraṇa-śodhana
Wound cleansing (NIA DG0306 'cleansing of the wound'); surgical sense.
laṅghana
Charaka makes saṁśuddhi a subtype of laṅghana (Su. 22.18); Vāgbhaṭa makes śodhana and śamana both subtypes of laṅghana (AH Su. 14.4).

Renderings that do not hold

  • detoxification / detox. Imports a biomedical/pop-wellness toxin model; the Sanskrit concept is removal of vitiated doṣa and mala, and the pharmaceutical śodhana is a different process again.
  • correction / correctives (Kaviratna). Obsolete and opaque to modern readers; reflects his reading of doṣa as 'faults'.
  • purification (unqualified). Carries ritual-purity connotations and fails to distinguish therapeutic, pharmaceutical and surgical śodhana.

Open questions

Recorded rather than resolved. Each one is something this entry cannot currently settle.

  • Charaka Kalpa/Siddhi formal definition of saṁśodhana by route (ūrdhva/adho) was not verified; carakasamhitaonline Kalpana Siddhi fetch did not return it.
  • Systematic reviews of Vamana/Panchakarma appeared as titles (JISM 2024, IJAM 2023) but were not PubMed-verified.
