saṁskāra: what the term means and how it is translated
saṁskāra संस्कार is an Ayurvedic technical term. It is rendered into English in 8 different ways, which is the reason this page exists: the renderings do not agree, and the difference between them changes what the term is taken to mean.

Sanskara; 'the production of other attributes by admixture'
Charaka Samhita tr. A. C. Kaviratna, public domain · Su.26 his 46 (list) and his 49 (definition) · public-domain translation
'by admixture' is not in the Sanskrit of Su.26.34 (संस्कारः करणं मतम्); Kaviratna imports the Vi.1.22 gloss and adds a mechanism.
Karana (Transmutation); 'transmutation or improvement of the products of Nature'; 'the super-inducing of other attributes'
Charaka Samhita tr. A. C. Kaviratna, public domain · Vi.1 (standard 1.21-22); his footnote: 'By 'sanskara' is meant improvement of a natural product, i. e., the super-inducing of some attribute that does not belong to it in a natural state.' (translator's note) · public-domain translation
'Transmutation' is alchemical English; 'super-inducing of other attributes' is a close calque of guṇāntarādhāna.

That, again, is called Karana which is a transmutation or improvement of the products of Nature. Verily, the super-inducing of other attributes is said to be Transmutation or Improvement. Those attributes are induced by the refinement brought about by contact with water and fire, by churning, by (virtue of) place and time, and perfuming, steeping, &c, as also by excellence through length of time, and (use of different kinds of) vessels and the rest.
The canonical definition: karaṇa = abhisaṁskāra of natural substances; saṁskāra = guṇāntarādhāna (conferring other qualities), achieved by water, fire, cleansing, churning, place, time, perfuming, impregnation, duration, vessel. Sanskrit as retrieved: करणं पुनः स्वाभाविकानां द्रव्याणामभिसंस्कारः| संस्कारो हि गुणान्तराधानमुच्यते|| (within ||२२||, https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php/Rasa_Vimana). Charaka SamhitaSutrasthana 26:Standard 26.29-30 (list) and 26.34 (definition); Kaviratna prints 44-45 after the list paragraph (printed p. 305) and 49 after the Parimāna/Saṁskāra/Abhyāsa block (printed p. 306), Lesson XXVI. His 46 belongs to the Yukti definition, not to the list. · checked against the source
They are Paratwa, Aparatwa, Yukti, Sankhyā, Samyoga, Vibhāga, Prithaktwa, Parimāna, Sanskāra, and Abhyāsa. These are regarded as means for the success of treatment. ... Samskāra is the production of other attributes by admixture.
Kaviratna's English for two things: (a) Charaka's list of the ten parādi guṇas (Su 26.29-30), in which 'Sanskara' is ninth, and (b) the one-line definition of saṁskāra in Su 26.34, whose Sanskrit is only संस्कारः करणं मतम् ('saṁskāra is held to be karaṇa, processing'). Membership in the parādi list rests on sentence (a), not on the definition. In (b), 'production of other attributes' follows the Vi.1.22 gloss and 'by admixture' is Kaviratna's own addition: it is his word for saṁyoga in the neighbouring definition ('Admixture or combination is Samyoga') and is not in the Sanskrit of 26.34.
Not to be confused with
- karaṇa
- Ca.Vi.1.22 uses karaṇa as the āyatana and saṁskāra as its definition; Ca.Su.26.34 reverses the direction (saṁskāraḥ karaṇaṁ matam). The two are near-synonyms in Charaka, not two steps.
- saṁyoga
- Combination of two or more substances (Ca.Vi.1.22); saṁskāra changes one substance's qualities. Kaviratna's 'by admixture' blurs this line.
- śodhana
- Purification of a toxic drug is one kind of saṁskāra (modern literature: Datura, aconite, Nerium), not the whole concept.
- saṁskāra (rites of passage; jātakarma etc.)
- WHO ITA-9.4.24 and following; a social-ritual sense that shares the word.
- saṁskāra (mental impressions, 'tendencies')
- Kaviratna's note (OCR line 46592) glosses 'Samskaras in this life, meaning tendencies or inclinations', the yoga/darshana sense.
- bhāvanā
- Impregnation/levigation; listed in Ca.Vi.1.22 as one of the means by which saṁskāra works, not a synonym.
Renderings that do not hold
- purification. Narrows saṁskāra to śodhana; the Vi.1.22 list includes cooking, churning, ageing, perfuming and vessel effects, which purify nothing.
- Transmutation. Kaviratna's word; carries alchemical connotations of changing substance, whereas the text says only that qualities are conferred (guṇāntarādhāna).
- production of other attributes by admixture. Kaviratna at Su.26 his 49; 'by admixture' is absent from the Sanskrit and collapses saṁskāra into saṁyoga.
Open questions
Recorded rather than resolved. Each one is something this entry cannot currently settle.
- Kaviratna's exact printed numbers in Vi.1 (OCR shows 'fls', '17', '1**', 't^'); a human should read the scan page 454-455.
- Whether the parādi list in Su.26 is a later interpolation relative to Vi.1 (not investigated).
