The following provisions relating to the ordinances of food are beneficial for the hale as also for those that are diseased. As regards some persons these become most beneficial at certain seasons in consequence of the very nature of those persons. Food that is warm, oily, and according to the proper measure, should be taken. It should also be taken after that previously taken has been properly digested. It should also consist of such ingredients as would not form a compound of hostile potencies. One should take one's food in a place that is agreeable, (i. e., not repulsive). The food one takes should, again, consist of dishes every one of which is agreeable One should not eat with haste ; or taking up a long time ; or talking, or laughing the while. While eating, one should eat with attention concentrated thereon. Lastly, one should eat after a proper survey of oneself.

Sushruta SamhitaSutrasthana XLVI (Annapana-vidhi; Bhishagratna's chapter number):Sanskrit verse number not established (Bhishagratna prints none) · checked against the source

A man, who is well-read in the Science of medicine (Ayurveda), should sit during his meal in an easy posture on a high seat and partake, at the right time, with his body erect and his whole mind engaged in the act of eating light, wholesome emollient and warm viands, which are congenial to his temperament and abound in fluid preparations, with an adequate quantity of boiled rice, neither too hurriedly nor too slowly, even when feeling the pinch of a keen and piercing hunger. Food eaten with a good appetite tastes pleasant and relishing. The food which is congenial to one's temperament begets no discomfort after the eating. Light food is soon digested. Emollient food gives tone and vigour to the system. Warm food improves the appetite. Food eaten neither too slowly nor too hurriedly is uniformly digested.

Not to be confused with

āhāra-vidhi-viśeṣāyatana (the eight factors)
Ca.Vi.1.21: prakṛti, karaṇa, saṁyoga, rāśi, deśa, kāla, upayogasaṁsthā, upayoktā - the determinants of a food's effect. The vidhāna (Vi.1.24) is the set of eating rules, which Chakrapani and modern authors place under the single factor upayogasaṁsthā. WHO 2022 encodes only the eight factors.
aṣṭa āhāra vidhi / 'eight rules of eating'
A hybrid phrase that mixes the eight āyatanas with the vidhāna's ten-odd rules; neither text has 'eight rules of eating'.
pathya
What is wholesome to eat; the vidhāna is how to eat.
mātrā (quantity, Ca.Su.5)
One item (mātrāvat) within the vidhāna, not the whole.

Renderings that do not hold

  • Eight rules of eating / eight dietetic rules. Conflates Vi.1.21 (eight āyatanas) with Vi.1.24 (the vidhāna, which lists about twelve injunctions).
  • Dietary guidelines (as food selection). The vidhāna is about the manner of eating (temperature, pace, attention, setting), not which foods to choose.

Open questions

Recorded rather than resolved. Each one is something this entry cannot currently settle.

  • Confirm Vi.1.24-25 numbering against a printed Trikamji edition; the sub-numbering (१)...(१०) within 25 varies between editions.
  • Whether WHO 2022 encodes the vidhāna anywhere under another head (I searched 'vidhividhān', 'rules for eating', 'dietary rules').
