- Topical curcumin is generally well-tolerated with minimal adverse effects; may cause temporary yellow staining of skin. The 0.5% microemulgel formulation showed excellent tolerability in clinical trials with no significant side effects
- Major limitation is low oral bioavailability; enhanced formulations (nano-curcumin, liposomal curcumin, piperine combinations) improve absorption. Oral curcumin at high doses (>8g/day) may cause GI disturbance. GRAS status by FDA for food use
