Bioavailability: Foeniculum vulgare essential oil contains trans-anethole (80-90%) as the dominant constituent. trans-Anethole has good oral bioavailability (>50%) with rapid GI absorption. It is metabolized by CYP enzymes to 4-methoxybenzoic acid. Estragole (minor component, 1-5%) has regulatory attention due to genotoxicity concerns in isolated form. Fenchone (5-15%) has good bioavailability and contributes to carminative action. Aqueous infusion of seeds provides flavonoids and phenolic acids with moderate bioavailability. Enhancement: microencapsulation of essential oil prevents volatile loss and provides sustained release.
