Key facts
Also known asAvaleha, Leha, Lehya, Avalehya, Avaleha Kalpana, Ayurvedic Confection

Avaleha (Sanskrit: *ava-*lih, “to lick”), also called Leha or Lehya, is the classical Ayurvedic semi-solid confection pharmaceutical dosage form. It is the kalpana (preparation class) that encompasses Chyawanprash, Vasa Avaleha, Kushmanda Avaleha, Agastya Haritaki, Bilwadi Leha, Manibhadra Guda and the full family of medicated jams, pastes and electuaries.

Definition

Per Sharangadhara Samhita Madhyama Khanda Chapter 8 — the canonical Avaleha Kalpana chapter — an Avaleha is a medicated paste prepared by combining:

  1. A herbal kashaya (decoction) or swarasa (juice) base, reduced and cooked
  2. A sugar/jaggery matrix cooked to defined pakva (consistency) stages
  3. Fine prakshep dravya (aromatic powders) added at lukewarm temperature
  4. Optional sneha (ghrita, taila) for lipid-mediated absorption
  5. Optional madhu (honey) added cold, after full cooling, to respect the viruddha (incompatibility) doctrine — hot honey generates Ama (toxic metabolite)

Pakva stages

Sharangadhara defines five grades of avaleha consistency, tested between fingers:

Why Avaleha matters

The dosage form solves four pharmacological problems classical practitioners faced:

  1. Palatability — allows bitter herb complexes to be delivered orally with compliance
  2. Bioavailability — the sneha (ghee/oil) matrix provides lipid-soluble absorption; the sugar-honey matrix provides rapid glucose-mediated uptake; the prakshep piperine enhances systemic absorption
  3. Shelf stability — high sugar content (≥65% w/w total solids) + airtight storage yields 24–36 month shelf life without refrigeration
  4. Multi-constituent synergy — allows 30–60+ herbs to be compounded in a single, stable, pleasant-tasting preparation

API standards (Avaleha general monograph)

  • Total solids: NLT 65% w/w
  • Moisture: <25%
  • pH: 3.5–5.0
  • Microbial limits per API
  • Heavy metals, pesticide residues, aflatoxins per API
  • Preparation-specific markers (e.g. gallic acid NLT 0.5% for Chyawanprash)

Consult a qualified vaidya before acting on anything here. Ayurvedic practice is prescribed to a person, not to a condition: the same dravya is given, withheld or substituted depending on your constitution, your agni, the season and what else you are already taking. A page cannot know any of that. Self-prescribing from a reference is how the wrong preparation, the wrong dose or the wrong anupana gets used.
