Medhya Rasayana

Medhya-rasāyana is the group of rasāyana dravyas Caraka names for medhā, intellect. Caraka Cikitsāsthāna 1.3 lists four: maṇḍūkaparṇī juice, yaṣṭīmadhu powder with milk, guḍūcī juice, and śaṅkhapuṣpī paste. The verse gives forms and vehicles rather than weights, and no course length is recorded.

Self-care. This is a practice a person can do for themselves. Read the cautions before starting.

What it is

Medhya-rasāyana is not one medicine. It is a named group of rasāyana dravyas, grouped by their action on medhā, intellect. Unlike the other practices in this section it is taken internally rather than applied.

Where it comes from in the classical literature

Caraka Saṃhitā, Cikitsāsthāna 1.3, the Karaprācitīya Rasāyana Pāda, verse 30, names four preparations:

The verse specifies a form and a vehicle for each. It does not state a weight, a frequency or a length of course.

What is used

Brāhmī, yaṣṭīmadhu, śaṅkhapuṣpī and guḍūcī. The first of these is written as brāhmī in the record’s dravya list and glossed as maṇḍūkaparṇī in its steps; maṇḍūkaparṇī is the name Caraka’s verse uses. Since those names are not applied consistently to a single plant across sources, it is worth confirming which botanical any given preparation actually contains.

What it involves

The method recorded is around 3 g of each of the four daily, or alternatively Brahma-rasāyana at 5 to 10 g in the morning on an empty stomach. Those quantities come from the record, not from Caraka’s verse, which gives no weights. No ingredient list for Brahma-rasāyana is given in the record.

Who should take care

No duration, frequency, season or contraindication is recorded here, so there is nothing in this source that supports taking these indefinitely.

One of the four, guḍūcī (Tinospora cordifolia), has been the subject of published liver-injury reports. A case series documented six patients with acute, predominantly hepatocellular liver injury after taking it, with the plant material confirmed as authentic T. cordifolia by morphology, HPTLC and DNA barcoding rather than a misidentified species. The authors proposed an immune-mediated mechanism; causality remains debated in the literature. This is a reason to involve a clinician before taking guḍūcī, particularly with existing liver disease.

Classical source

Caraka Saṃhitā, Cikitsāsthāna 1.3 (Karaprācitīya Rasāyana Pāda), v. 30 — checked against a published translation

The record cites "Caraka Cikitsā 1.3 (Medhya-rasāyana)". Confirmed: Cikitsāsthāna 1.3 is the Karaprācitīya Rasāyana Pāda, and verse 30 is the medhya-rasāyana verse naming maṇḍūkaparṇī svarasa, yaṣṭīmadhu cūrṇa with milk, guḍūcī rasa and śaṅkhapuṣpī kalka. Common questions

What are Caraka's four medhya rasayanas?
Caraka Cikitsāsthāna 1.3, verse 30 names maṇḍūkaparṇī as fresh juice, yaṣṭīmadhu as powder taken with milk, guḍūcī as juice of the plant with root and flower, and śaṅkhapuṣpī as a paste.
How much should I take, and for how long?
The classical verse does not say. It gives the form and the vehicle for each drug and no weight or course length. The quantities you will see quoted, around 3 g of each daily, come from later practice, not from the verse, and there is no recorded duration.
Is it safe to take these long-term on my own?
There is nothing in the classical verse or in this record that sets a safe duration, and one of the four, guḍūcī, has published liver-injury case reports attached to it. This is a protocol to start under a vaidya's or doctor's advice, especially alongside other medicines.

Consult a qualified vaidya before acting on anything here. Ayurvedic practice is prescribed to a person, not to a condition: the same procedure is given, modified or withheld depending on your constitution, your agni, the season and what else you are already doing. A page cannot know any of that.
