Vathada (Prunus dulcis) is a plant used in Ayurveda. Almond protein has high digestibility (>85%). Monounsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid) are well absorbed (>90%). Polyphenols from almond skin have low bioavailability (~5-15%) but are converted to bioactive metabolites by gut microbiota.

Dosage forms and preparation

Dosage Forms: Kernel (raw or processed), Oil (Vathada Taila/Almond oil), Churna (powder), Capsule (oil-filled softgel), Milk (Vathada Kshira), Paste

Standard Dosage: 5-10 almonds (soaked and peeled) daily; 5-10 mL almond oil internally; 3-6 g kernel powder with milk twice daily

Bioavailability: Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) from almonds has good bioavailability (~40-50%) enhanced by the lipid matrix. Almond protein has high digestibility (>85%). Monounsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid) are well absorbed (>90%). Polyphenols from almond skin have low bioavailability (~5-15%) but are converted to bioactive metabolites by gut microbiota. Soaking and peeling (traditional Ayurvedic practice) improves digestibility by removing tannin-rich skin and neutralizing phytic acid.

Optimal Timing: Morning with warm milk for Medhya (cognitive) effect; soaked almonds (overnight) eaten first thing in morning; oil at bedtime with milk for Vata-pacifying action

Standardized Extract: Cold-pressed oil: acid value <1.0, peroxide value <10, alpha-tocopherol >20 mg/100g; defatted kernel powder standardized to >40% protein, >8% fiber

Shelf Life: Whole kernels: 12-18 months; Cold-pressed oil: 12-18 months; Softgels: 24 months; Almond powder: 6-12 months (rancidity risk)

Storage: Kernels and powder in airtight containers at 15-25 deg C; refrigeration (2-8 deg C) extends shelf life. Oil in dark glass bottles, protect from light and heat. Include allergen warning: CONTAINS TREE NUTS.
