Varahikanda
Dioscorea bulbifera
Varahikanda (Dioscorea bulbifera) is a plant used in Ayurveda. However, it is a critical precursor for pharmaceutical steroid synthesis. Bioavailability is significantly enhanced (3-5 fold) by lipid-based delivery systems (SEDDS, nanoemulsions) or phospholipid complexation.

Dosage forms and preparation
Dosage Forms: Churna (powder), Kwatha (decoction), Capsule, Tablet, Avaleha (confection), Modaka
Standard Dosage: 3-6 g powder twice daily with milk or ghee; 50-100 mL decoction twice daily
Bioavailability: Diosgenin (steroidal sapogenin) has low oral bioavailability (~10-15%) due to poor aqueous solubility and extensive hepatic metabolism. However, it is a critical precursor for pharmaceutical steroid synthesis. Bioavailability is significantly enhanced (3-5 fold) by lipid-based delivery systems (SEDDS, nanoemulsions) or phospholipid complexation. Dioscin (glycosylated form) is hydrolyzed by gut bacteria to diosgenin, providing delayed absorption.
Optimal Timing: After meals with warm milk or ghee for Rasayana (rejuvenative) effect; morning and evening dosing
Standardized Extract: Hydroethanolic extract standardized to >10% total saponins (as diosgenin equivalent by HPLC after acid hydrolysis); processed (Shodhit) tuber powder with documented detoxification protocol
Shelf Life: Processed powder: 18-24 months; Capsules/Tablets: 24-36 months; Avaleha: 18-24 months
Storage: Airtight, moisture-proof containers at 15-25 deg C. Protect from insects (starchy material attracts pests). Unprocessed tubers must be clearly labeled ‘NOT FOR DIRECT CONSUMPTION - REQUIRES SHODHANA’.
Marker Compounds: Diosgenin, Dioscin, Dioscorine (toxic - must be absent/below limit after Shodhana), beta-Sitosterol, Stigmasterol, Kaempferol, Quercetin
Extraction Methods
- Hydroethanolic extraction (60-80% ethanol)
- Acid hydrolysis of saponins to release sapogenins
- Supercritical CO2 extraction
- Soxhlet extraction with methanol
- Enzymatic hydrolysis for diosgenin release
Synergistic Combinations
- Ashwagandha - adaptogenic and anabolic synergy
- Shatavari - female reproductive tonic combination
- Musali (Chlorophytum borivilianum) - vitality and vigor combination
- Ghrita (ghee) - lipid vehicle enhances diosgenin absorption
Consult a qualified vaidya before acting on anything here. Ayurvedic practice is prescribed to a person, not to a condition: the same dravya is given, withheld or substituted depending on your constitution, your agni, the season and what else you are already taking. A page cannot know any of that. Self-prescribing from a reference is how the wrong preparation, the wrong dose or the wrong anupana gets used.
