# The Shirodhara pot and the modern apparatus

> The traditional vessel is an earthen, brass or copper pot with a small hole at the base, suspended from a stand or ceiling above the forehead, often with a cotton wick through the hole to steady the stream. Modern versions keep the same principle and change the frame, the flow control and, in some designs, the oil return path.

## The traditional vessel

The classical apparatus is a *dhara patra*, a vessel with a small orifice at the lowest point,
hung so that the orifice sits about ten to twelve centimetres above the forehead. A cotton
wick threaded through the hole steadies the flow and stops it breaking into drips, which is
the failure mode that matters.

Materials in traditional use, and what each was chosen for:

The stand is traditionally a *dhara stambha*, a fixed wooden or metal frame, or the pot is
suspended from a ceiling hook. Either way it is part of the room, not a portable object.

## What modern designs changed

Three things, in order of how much difference they make.

**The frame.** Fixed stands became collapsible frames. This is what took the practice out of
a dedicated wet room. A frame that folds is a frame that can live in a cupboard and be set up
in a treatment room, a hotel spa or a bedroom.

**The oil return.** Traditionally the oil falls into a basin and an assistant strains and
returns it. Closed-loop designs catch the run-off in an integrated base and feed it back to
the vessel, which is what makes single-operator sessions practical.

**Flow control.** A wick works but is imprecise. Modern vessels use a valve or a shaped
orifice for a repeatable stream.

What did **not** change is the physics. It is still gravity, still a single continuous thread,
still the same height above the forehead. Electric circulation and heated reservoirs exist in
clinic-grade equipment, but they are a convenience layer over the same procedure.

## Regulatory position

CDSCO has published no classification for Shirodhara or other Panchakarma apparatus, and
that is not the same as being outside the rules. Since notification S.O. 648(E) took effect
on 1 April 2020, India's Medical Device Rules apply by intended purpose rather than by list
membership, so what decides the position is the purpose a manufacturer states, not whether
the category has been enumerated. There is no AYUSH standard for Panchakarma equipment
either: the published literature describes that as a gap rather than a regime.

In the United States such a device would generally fall under the FDA's general wellness
policy, which is enforcement discretion rather than a finding that the product is not a
device, and which requires both a wellness purpose and low risk. In the EU it stays outside
the Medical Device Regulation while its manufacturer states no medical purpose. Everywhere, a therapeutic
claim is what moves it: in India and the EU it brings a product inside medical device
regulation, and in the United States it removes the FDA's forbearance. The full position is at

Nothing here is outside regulation altogether: general product safety law, electrical
compliance and advertising law all still apply. A vendor advertising treatment of a named
condition is the thing to be sceptical of.
