## How it is translated, and whether the translation holds

Each rendering is given with the source that uses it. The assessment is ours.

### minuteness/penetrating; one of the gurvadi gunas; caused due activated akash, agni & vayu; denotes physiological & pharmacological minuteness & penetration;

WHO International Standard Terminologies on Ayurveda (2022) · code DG0333, headword printed 'sukṣma' (sic) · comparator

Main comparator entry; entry text ends with a semicolon (incomplete as printed).

### the property of the substance which causes minuteness and decrease body mass

WHO International Standard Terminologies on Ayurveda (2022) · code BP0275, headword 'sukṣmaḥ' (sic) · comparator

Second WHO entry, in the basic-principles series; 'decrease body mass' is not supported by the Charaka passages retrieved.

### Minute, Poison penetrates into and deranges the minutest capillaries owing to its extreme subtle essence.

WHO International Standard Terminologies on Ayurveda (2022) · code AT0324 'sūkṣmaṁ' (toxicology series); also 'Sūkṣma (minute)' among Vāyu attributes in the vāta entry · comparator

Shows WHO's own vocabulary oscillating between 'minute' and 'subtle'.

### subtile

Charaka Samhita tr. A. C. Kaviratna, public domain · Su.1 his 58 (vata 'dry, cold, light, subtile, unstable, clear, keen'); Su.22 his 10 langhana list; Su.26 his 24, 25, 26 (agneya, vayavya, akashiya lists) · public-domain translation

Archaic spelling of 'subtle', used consistently; his Su.22 footnote defines it: 'implying that the drug itself is minute and has its operation on the minuter parts of the physical organism'.

### subtle in its essence

Sushruta Samhita tr. K. L. Bhishagratna, public domain, via wisdomlib · Su.41 (taijasa: 'subtle in its essence, permeates the minutest capillaries'; vayaviya: 'subtle in its essence'; akashiya: 'subtle in its nature') · public-domain translation

Consistent 'subtle'; the gloss 'permeates the minutest capillaries' appears to be the translator's expansion.

### Sukshma Guna means 'fineness' quality

easyayurveda.com 'Gurvadi Gunas' (Hebbar), modern · https://www.easyayurveda.com/2019/06/12/gurvadi-gunas/ · modern web textbook

Assigns fire, air and space; pairs with sthula.

## The classical passages

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 1:Standard 1.59; Kaviratna prints 58, checked against the source

> Wind, which may be dry, cold, light, subtile, unstable, clear, keen, is cured by objects which have adverse attributes.

tr. A. C. Kaviratna · https://archive.org/download/BIUSante_47357/BIUSante_47357_djvu.txt

Sūkṣma as the fourth quality of Vāta. Kaviratna's 'keen' here is khara (rough), by position in the seven-item list.

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 22:Standard 22.12 (plus first line after ||12|| per carakasamhitaonline danda placement); Kaviratna prints 10, checked against the source

> Such things as are light, warm, pungent, not slimy, dry, subtile, rough, unstable, and hard, are generally Langhana.

tr. A. C. Kaviratna · https://archive.org/download/BIUSante_47357/BIUSante_47357_djvu.txt

Sūkṣma as a laṅghana (lightening) quality. Sanskrit as retrieved: लघूष्णतीक्ष्णविशदं रूक्षं सूक्ष्मं खरं सरम्||१२|| कठिनं चैव यद्द्रव्यं प्रायस्तल्लङ्घनं स्मृतम्| (https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php/Langhanabrimhaniya_Adhyaya).

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 22:Kaviratna's footnote to his 10 (standard 22.12), checked against the source

> 'Sukshma' is subtile, implying that the drug itself is minute and has its operation on the minuter parts of the physical organism.

tr. A. C. Kaviratna · https://archive.org/download/BIUSante_47357/BIUSante_47357_djvu.txt

TRANSLATOR'S NOTE, not the text: Kaviratna's operational gloss of sūkṣma (minute substance acting on minute parts). Useful as the earliest English definition found, but editorial.

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 26:Standard 26.11 (single prose unit); Kaviratna prints 24, 25, 26 after the fire, wind and ether sentences, checked against the source

> Those that are principally hot, keen, subtile, light, dry, and clear, and largely endued with the attribute of form, are regarded as appertaining to Fire. Those that are principally light, cold, dry, sharp, clear, subtile, and largely endued with the attribute of touch, are regarded as appertaining to Wind. Those that are mild, light, subtile, smooth, and largely endued with the property of sound, are regarded as having Ether for their essence.

tr. A. C. Kaviratna · https://archive.org/download/BIUSante_47357/BIUSante_47357_djvu.txt

Sūkṣma attributed to fire-, air- and space-dominant substances (the basis of WHO's 'akash, agni & vayu'). Sanskrit as retrieved: उष्णतीक्ष्णसूक्ष्मलघुरूक्षविशदरूपगुणबहुलान्याग्नेयानि ... लघुशीतरूक्षखरविशदसूक्ष्मस्पर्शगुणबहुलानि वायव्यानि ... मृदुलघुसूक्ष्मश्लक्ष्णशब्दगुणबहुलान्याकाशात्मकानि ... ||११|| (https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php/Atreyabhadrakapyiya_Adhyaya). Kaviratna's 'sharp' in the Wind list is khara.

### Sushruta Samhita Sutrasthana 41:Sanskrit verse number not established (Bhishagratna prints none), checked against the source

> A thing or substance, which is heat-making, pungent and keen, subtle in its essence, permeates the minutest capillaries, and is dry, rough, light, and non-slimy in its character and has strong properties and a taste which is largely pungent marked by a shade of saline, is called a substance of the dominant principle of fire (Taijasam).

tr. K. L. Bhishagratna · https://www.wisdomlib.org/hinduism/book/sushruta-samhita-volume-1-sutrasthana/d/doc141671.html

Sūkṣma ('subtle in its essence') as a quality of fire-dominant substance in Sushruta, paralleling Ca.Su.26.11; 'permeates the minutest capillaries' is likely translator's expansion and should not be read as the Sanskrit.

### Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 1:18 (GRETIL, Das and Emmerick numbering), checked against the source

> guru-manda-hima-snigdha-ślakṣṇa-sāndra-mṛdu-sthirāḥ | guṇāḥ sa-sūkṣma-viśadā viṃśatiḥ sa-viparyayāḥ || 18 ||

tr. none; Sanskrit only · http://gretil.sub.uni-goettingen.de/gretil/1_sanskr/6_sastra/7_ayur/vagaah_u.htm

Sūkṣma named explicitly among the ten gunas whose opposites complete the twenty. Reference only.

## Not to be confused with

- **sthūla.** Opposite member of the pair.
- **laghu.** Light (easy to digest) is a separate pair; both appear in the Vāta and laṅghana lists, so renderings like 'fine/light' merge them.
- **aṇu.** Also 'minute'; used of srotas size (WHO 'Sthūla (macro) and Aṇu (micro)') and of manas; not the gurvadi guna.
- **sūkṣma śarīra.** 'Subtle body' (WHO BP0274), a Sankhya-derived philosophical term unrelated to the drug quality.
- **tīkṣṇa.** Both are glossed 'penetrating'; tīkṣṇa is speed/sharpness of action, sūkṣma is fineness of substance (Kaviratna's note).

## Renderings that do not hold

- subtle (in the philosophical/spiritual sense). Imports the sūkṣma-śarīra sense into pharmacology; the Charaka passages describe a physical quality of substances and of Vāta.
- decrease body mass. WHO BP0275's gloss; the retrieved Charaka passages attribute no mass-reducing karma to sūkṣma specifically (that is laṅghana as a whole).

## Open questions

Recorded rather than resolved.

- Chakrapani's gloss on sūkṣma (srotas-penetrating) was not retrieved; Kaviratna's footnote may derive from it.
- Sanskrit verse numbers for the Sushruta Su.41 element lists.
