### Posttherapy dietary regimen for revival of digestion

WHO International Standard Terminologies on Ayurveda (2022) · ITA-9.2.110: 'The dietary regimen for restoration of agni after cleansing therapy.' IAST saṁsarjana-kramaḥ (index spelling samsarjanakramaḥ). Adjacent ITA-9.2.109 paścāt-karma and ITA-9.2.111 parihārakālaḥ 'Period of restrictions' · comparator-standard

WHO treats it as a sub-item of cleansing therapy, adjacent to paścātkarma.

### Rehabilitation diet after purification; 'Sansarjana karma (rehabilitation diet)'

carakasamhitaonline.com (Charak Samhita Research, Training and Skill Development Centre, 2020), Upakalpaniya Adhyaya section heading 2.13 · https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php/Upakalpaniya_Adhyaya · modern-translation (in copyright; term rendering only)

Note the site writes 'karma' for 'krama' in its heading; the Sanskrit in verse 25 reads saṁsarjanakramaḥ.

### [no term; describes the regimen as successive 'acts of eating'] and in the chapter summary 'what the order is in which the corrective medicines should be administered'

Kaviratna, Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana Lesson XV · archive.org OCR; his printed number 18 for the diet passage (standard Su. 15.16) · public-domain-translation

Kaviratna does not transliterate the term; whether his summary phrase renders 'yaśca saṁsarjanakramaḥ' (Su. 15.25) is plausible but not established.

## The classical passages

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 15 (Upakalpanīya):25 (carakasamhitaonline, Trikamji numbering; summary verse), checked against the source

> यश्च संसर्जनक्रमः

tr. Sanskrit text · https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php/Upakalpaniya_Adhyaya

The compound saṁsarjanakrama occurs in Charaka's own chapter summary; verifies Devanagari and the 'krama' (not 'karma') spelling.

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 15:16 (carakasamhitaonline, Trikamji numbering; prose). Kaviratna prints 18 after his rendering of this passage. Both recorded; no conversion., checked against the source

> athainaṁ sāyāhnē parē vā'hni sukhōdakapariṣiktaṁ purāṇānāṁ lōhitaśālitaṇḍulānāṁ...

tr. Sanskrit text (IAST as displayed; opening fragment only) · https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php/Upakalpaniya_Adhyaya

Start of the post-vamana diet prescription (peyā from old red śāli rice); the full prose unit continues through the twelfth meal.

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana Lesson XV (Upakalpaniyam):Kaviratna's printed 18 (standard 16), checked against the source

> The patient should then, in the evening of that day, or on the next day, be caused to bathe in lukewarm water. Take then a little quantity of red Cali rice, boil it in water and make a manda of it. The Liquid portion that is to be obtained after the manda has settled down is the gruel that should be administered, while still agreeably warm, to the patient. Marking the strength of his appetite, similar food should be administered to him when the time comes for his second as also his thrid act of eating. When the time comes for the fourth act of eating, similar kind of Cali rice should be taken and boiling it well into a jelly-like substance, mixing it with warm water, and without using any ghee or salt, or using a very little of either, it should be administered to him. [...] On the expiry of a week, however, the patient may betake himself to his usual regimen.18

tr. Avinash Chandra Kaviratna (OCR text; 'Cali' = śāli, 'thrid' is an OCR/print error) · https://archive.org/download/BIUSante_47357/BIUSante_47357_djvu.txt

Kaviratna's rendering of the graduated diet: thin gruel for meals 1-3, thicker preparation for 4-6, then mudga gruel, then meat soup with rice from the tenth meal, a week of the same, then normal diet.

### Charaka Samhita Siddhisthana 1 (Kalpanā Siddhi):11-12½ as displayed on carakasamhitaonline ('[11-11½]' for the peyā-vilepī sequence, '[12-12½]' for the fire simile), checked against the source

> yathā'ṇuragnistr̥ṇagōmayādyaiḥ sandhukṣyamāṇō bhavati kramēṇa

tr. Sanskrit text (IAST fragment as displayed) · https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php/Kalpana_Siddhi

The simile of agni after śodhana as a small fire kindled gradually with grass and cow-dung, the rationale for the graduated diet.

## Where this term does work in the theory

One concept record names this term as one of its components, and glosses it there as follows.

- **[Shodhana and Shamana (purification versus pacification)](https://nighantu.ageayurveda.com/concept/shodhana-shamana/)** (as Samsarjana krama): The graded re-feeding regimen that follows shodhana. The regimen itself is quoted in the samsarjana-krama lexicon entry: the opening clause of Charaka Su. 15.16 in Sanskrit, and Kaviratna's English of the same passage (his printed 18), which runs from thin gruel through mudga soup and meat broth to the usual diet after a week. Charaka Siddhi Sthana 1.11-12 gives its rationale, agni after shodhana kindled gradually like a small fire, quoted there as a fragment. The 2026 protocol at PMID 42748372 states that its participants received it. Whether the outcome of shodhana depends on it is not addressed by anything quoted in this record.

## Not to be confused with

- **paścātkarma.** The whole post-procedure phase; saṁsarjana krama is its dietary component (WHO lists them as ITA-9.2.109 and 9.2.110).
- **parihāra kāla.** Period of restrictions after śodhana (WHO ITA-9.2.111); concerns conduct, not diet sequence.
- **laṅghana / upavāsa.** Reduction and fasting; saṁsarjana is graded re-feeding, the opposite movement.
- **peyā, vilepī, yūṣa, māṁsarasa.** The individual stages; often cited as if any one of them were the krama.
- **saṁsarjana karma.** Spelling error that changes the meaning: krama = sequence/order; karma = action. Charaka Su. 15.25 reads kramaḥ.

## Renderings that do not hold

- detox diet. The regimen follows detoxifying procedures and aims to rebuild agni; it is not itself a cleansing diet.
- post-panchakarma fasting. It is scheduled feeding from the first evening, not fasting.
- rehabilitation diet (unqualified). Acceptable shorthand but loses the defining idea of graded sequence (krama) and the agni rationale.

## Open questions

Recorded rather than resolved.

- Confirm Kaviratna's verse 22 footnote location and the standard number of his '22'.
- Whether Sushruta describes an equivalent regimen (easyayurveda search results mention Sushruta's version); not verified in Bhishagratna.
- Full Sanskrit of Charaka Su. 15.16 should be read in a numbered Sanskrit edition; only the opening clause was captured.
