Each rendering is given with the source that uses it. The assessment is ours.

### Pitta for intellect

WHO international standard terminologies on Ayurveda (2022), term ID ITA-2.1.2.6 · ITA-2.1.2.6; printed p. 35 (PDF p. 53). Sanskrit term 'sādhakapittam'. Description: 'Subtype of pitta seated in the heart which is responsible for driving the higher mental functions involving decisions and actions for accomplishments.' · standards-body

The English label 'Pitta for intellect' is narrower than WHO's own description, which correctly keeps the 'accomplishment' sense (sādhana). Note WHO places sādhaka LAST among the five pittas (ITA-2.1.2.6), after ālocaka and bhrājaka, a different order from both Suśruta and Vāgbhaṭa.

### Sadhakagni (performing or operating heat or fire)

Suśruta Saṃhitā tr. Kaviraj Kunja Lal Bhishagratna (public domain) · Sūtrasthāna ch. 21, Wikisource text · public-domain-translation

Bhishagratna renders sādhaka by its root sense, accomplishing, bringing to effect, with no mention of intellect. This is the purely Suśrutan reading and differs markedly from the WHO/Vāgbhaṭa cognitive framing.

### Sadhaka (Medhakrit and Ojakrit)

Suśruta Saṃhitā tr. Bhishagratna, footnote at Sūtrasthāna ch. 15 · 'They are named as Ranjaka. Pachaka, Sadhaka (Medhakrit and Ojakrit), Alochaka and Bhrajaka.' · public-domain-translation

Important: Bhishagratna maps sādhaka onto TWO of the six functions at Su.Sū. 15.4, medhā-kṛt (intellect-making) and ojas-kṛt (vitality-making). This is where the 'intellect' sense enters the Suśrutan line, via the footnote's mapping, not via 21.10.

### helps in fulfilling the desires of the mind

EasyAyurveda, Suśruta Sūtrasthāna 21 study page · Commentary under Su.Sū. 21.10 · modern-textbook-website

A close rendering of the mūla's 'abhiprārthita-manoratha-sādhana-kṛt'. Preferable to 'intellect' as a gloss on the Suśrutan text specifically.

The source's own wording is not reproduced here: "F1000Research (2023), Chittodvega/GAD trial protocol" is not a source this project has cleared for quotation.

The source's rendering is not reproduced here, because this project has not cleared that source for quotation.

Follows Vāgbhaṭa's buddhi/medhā/abhimāna list, not Suśruta's. A good example of a paper adopting the AH reading without saying so.

## The classical passages

### Suśruta Saṃhitā Sūtrasthāna 21 (Vraṇapraśna Adhyāya), checked against the source

> The Sadhakagni:—The Pittam seated in the heart is denominated as the Sadhakagni (performing or operating heat or fire) inasmuch as its action is to bring about the fruition or realisation of one's desires.

tr. Kaviraj Kunja Lal Bhishagratna · https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Sushruta_Samhita,_Volume_1/Chapter_21

Seat = heart (hṛdaya); function = realisation/fulfilment of desires; designation = sādhakāgni. Notably NOT framed as intellect.

### Suśruta Saṃhitā (Sanskrit mūla) Sūtrasthāna 21:10, checked against the source

> यत् पित्तं हृदयस्थं तस्मिन् साधकोऽग्निरिति सञ्ज्ञा, सोऽभिप्रार्थितमनोरथसाधनकृदुक्तः;

Sanskrit mūla · https://www.easyayurveda.com/sushruta-samhita-sutrasthana-21-vranaprashna-adhyaya-question-concerning-wounds/

Confirms the seat hṛdaya-stha and the function 'abhiprārthita-manoratha-sādhana-kṛt', accomplisher of longed-for wishes. The mūla contains no word for intellect, memory or cognition.

### Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya (Sanskrit mūla; no public-domain English translation exists, so no translation is quoted) Sūtrasthāna 12 (Doṣabhedīya):13

**Quotation withheld:** nobody has yet read this quotation against its printed source, and an unchecked quotation is not published here. The passage is at https://www.easyayurveda.com/2013/04/16/dosha-types-increase-and-decrease/

Vāgbhaṭa keeps the heart seat but ADDS the explicit cognitive triad buddhi (intellect), medhā (retentive intelligence) and abhimāna (self-regard), as the means by which the desired end is accomplished. This is the source of the modern 'intellect/emotion' framing and of WHO's description.

## Not to be confused with

- **sādhaka (the yogic practitioner).** CRITICAL retrieval hazard. 'Sadhaka' as an ordinary Sanskrit noun means an aspirant or practitioner. PMID 22557690 ('Place of nutrition in yoga') is returned by a 'sadhaka'[TIAB] PubMed search purely because it discusses diet for the 'Yoga Sadhaka', it has nothing to do with the doṣa subtype. Any automated literature harvest on this term will pick up false positives of this kind.
- **prāṇa-vāta and manas.** All three are credited with mental function and all three are associated with the hṛdaya. Sādhaka is the pitta component (drive, ambition, discrimination, accomplishment); prāṇa vāta governs the mind's movement and grasping; manas is the mental faculty itself, not a doṣa.
- **ojas.** Bhishagratna's Su.Sū. 15 footnote maps sādhaka onto both medhā-kṛt AND ojas-kṛt, which blurs sādhaka into ojas production. Later systematisations usually do not, so the footnote should not be read as settled doctrine.
- **avalambaka-kapha.** Both are seated at or around the heart and both are invoked together in cardiac and hypertension papers (PMID 29153383, PMID 40972327). Sādhaka is the functional/mental-drive component; avalambaka is the structural/supportive one.

## Renderings that do not hold

- "the pitta of the intellect" applied to Suśruta. Suśruta 21.10 says only 'accomplisher of longed-for wishes'. The intellect content (buddhi, medhā, abhimāna) is Vāgbhaṭa's addition at AH Sū 12.13. Attaching it to a Suśruta citation misreports the source.
- "neurotransmitters" / "serotonin and dopamine". A proposed correlate, never a translation. The classical function is teleological (bringing an intended end about); neurotransmitters are a mechanism. No study has operationalised, let alone measured, sādhaka pitta.
- "emotional pitta" / "the pitta of emotions". Neither text mentions emotion. Sādhana is about accomplishment and resolve. 'Emotional' is a Western-psychology import that also collides with the entirely separate classical treatment of the manas.

## Open questions

Recorded rather than resolved.

- Does Suśruta's 'accomplishment' sense and Vāgbhaṭa's 'buddhi-medhā-abhimāna' sense represent a real doctrinal development, or is Dalhaṇa already reading the cognitive sense into Suśruta? Needs the commentary.
- Bhishagratna's footnote pairs sādhaka with ojas-kṛt. Is that his own inference or does it follow Dalhaṇa?
- Whether NAMASTE or ICD-11 TM2 carries any sādhaka-pitta entry.
