## How it is translated, and whether the translation holds

Each rendering is given with the source that uses it. The assessment is ours.

### Panchakarma

WHO International Standard Terminologies on Ayurveda (2022) · ITA-9.2.2 pañcakarma: 'Five internal cleansing therapies, comprising emesis, purgation, decoction enema, unctuous enema and errhine therapy.' Placed under 9.2 directly after ITA-9.2.1 saṁśodhanakarma 'Cleansing therapy'. · comparator-standard

WHO uses the transliteration as the English headword and fixes the Charaka enumeration (two enemas, no bloodletting).

Reproduced unaltered and attributed from the WHO International Standard Terminologies on Ayurveda, which is what that
licence permits, and deliberately absent from the downloadable dataset, which is CC BY 4.0.

### the five kinds of action or evacuation; 'these five operations (i.e., purgation, vomiting, &c.,)'; 'the five acts'

Kaviratna, Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana Lesson II · archive.org BIUSante_47357 OCR, his printed 12-13 (standard 2.15 for the 'pañcakarmāṇi kurvīta' verse) and his footnote · public-domain-translation

Kaviratna never writes 'panchakarma'; 'action or evacuation' and 'operations' are his renderings of karma, and his enumeration of the five is in a footnote.

### Ayurvedic cleansing retreat program, Panchakarma; Panchakarma procedures; panchakarma therapies

PubMed usage: PMID 19412555; PMID 36944117 · textbook-usage

In Western wellness settings 'Panchakarma' names a multi-day retreat package rather than the five procedures.

### five-fold purification / bio-purification / detoxification therapies

Common textbook usage (not traced to a quotable edition) · textbook-usage · our paraphrase of the source, not its words

'Detox' is the popular gloss; see mistranslations.

### pañca-dhā śodhanam: nirūha, vamana, kāya-reka, śiro-reka, asra-visruti

Vāgbhaṭa, Aṣṭāṅgahṛdaya Sutrasthana 14.5 (GRETIL e-text; Sanskrit only) · GRETIL sa_vAgbhaTa-aSTAGgahRdayasUtra, chapter 14 verse 5 · classical-sanskrit

Vāgbhaṭa's five count nirūha once and include bloodletting, which differs from WHO/Charaka; this is the root of the 'does raktamokṣaṇa belong' dispute.

## The classical passages

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 2 (Apāmārgatanḍulīya):15 (carakasamhitaonline numbering); Kaviratna prints 13 (OCR reads '18'), checked against the source

> तान्युपस्थितदोषाणां स्नेहस्वेदोपपादनैः| पञ्चकर्माणि कुर्वीत मात्राकालौ विचारयन्||१५||

tr. Sanskrit text (no translator) · https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php?title=Apamarga_Tanduliya_Adhyaya&action=raw

The compound pañcakarmāṇi in Charaka: the five actions are to be done, after oleation and sudation, when doṣas are ready, with regard to dose and time. The verse does not name the five.

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana Lesson II:Kaviratna's printed 12 and 13 (the OCR shows '18' for the second; standard 2.15 for the 'dose and time' sentence, the standard number of the preceding summary half-verse not separately established), checked against the source

> Thus have been mentioned in brief the drugs that promote the five kinds of action or evacuation. When disorders have happened, these five operations (i.e., purgation, vomiting, &c.,) should be caused, after use of emollients and diaphoretics, upon consideration of dose and time.

tr. Avinash Chandra Kaviratna (OCR text; spacing normalized) · https://archive.org/download/BIUSante_47357/BIUSante_47357_djvu.txt

Kaviratna's rendering of pañcakarma as 'five kinds of action or evacuation' / 'five operations'.

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana Lesson II:TRANSLATOR'S FOOTNOTE to his printed 12, not the text, checked against the source

> These are (1) those used as purgatives, (2) those used as emetics, (3) those used as errhines, (4) those called niruha (asthapana), and (5) those used as anuvasana. The last two are enemata with this difference that the first is not all oily, while the second is entirely oily.

tr. Avinash Chandra Kaviratna (OCR text; spacing normalized), footnote · https://archive.org/download/BIUSante_47357/BIUSante_47357_djvu.txt

The enumeration of Charaka's five (two enemas, no bloodletting) is supplied by the translator's note; the Sanskrit of 2.15 does not list them, though the drug-classes of 2.3-14 imply them.

### Charaka Samhita Siddhisthana 1 (Kalpanā Siddhi):3 and 60 (carakasamhitaonline numbering), checked against the source

> का कल्पना पञ्चसु कर्मसूक्ता, क्रमश्च कः, किं च कृताकृतेषु| ... ||३|| ... प्रश्नानिमान् द्वादश पञ्चकर्माण्युद्दिश्य सिद्धाविह कल्पनायाम्||६०||

tr. Sanskrit text (no translator); ellipses mark omitted text · https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php?title=Kalpana_Siddhi&action=raw

The Siddhisthana opens with twelve questions 'regarding the five karmas' and closes naming them pañcakarmāṇi; the Siddhisthana is Charaka's pañcakarma section.

### Charaka Samhita Siddhisthana 2 (Pañcakarmīya Siddhi):1 and 3 (carakasamhitaonline numbering), checked against the source

> अथातः पञ्चकर्मीयां  सिद्धिं व्याख्यास्यामः||१|| ... येषां यस्मात् पञ्चकर्माण्यग्निवेश न कारयेत्| येषां च कारयेत्तानि तत् सर्वं सम्प्रवक्ष्यते||३||

tr. Sanskrit text (no translator) · https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php?title=Panchakarmiya_Siddhi&action=raw

A chapter named for pañcakarma, on who should and should not receive the five.

### Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 14 (Dvividhopakramaṇīya):4-5 (GRETIL e-text numbering; chapter confirmed by '14.14cv' variant markers nearby), checked against the source

> śodhanaṃ śamanaṃ ceti dvi-dhā tatrāpi laṅghanam || 4 || yad īrayed bahir doṣān pañca-dhā śodhanaṃ ca tat | nirūho vamanaṃ kāya-śiro-reko 'sra-visrutiḥ || 5 ||

tr. Sanskrit text (Das and Emmerick transcription); no English quotable · http://gretil.sub.uni-goettingen.de/gretil/corpustei/transformations/plaintext/sa_vAgbhaTa-aSTAGgahRdayasUtra.txt

Vāgbhaṭa's fivefold śodhana: nirūha, vamana, purgation (kāya-reka), śirovirecana (śiro-reka) and bloodletting (asra-visruti). He does not use the word pañcakarma here.

### Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana Lesson XXII:Kaviratna's printed 16 (Lesson XXII, his p. 245, paragraph ends 'these are all included under Langhana.§16', the § being his footnote mark on Pachana) = standard Ca.Su.22.18 'chatushprakara samshuddhih pipasa marutatapau | pachananyupavasashcha vyayamashcheti langhanam ||18||'. On this page he runs two behind standard: his 10 (langhana gunas) = std 12-13a, 11 = 13b-14a, 12 = 14b-15a, 13 = 15b-16a, 14 = 16b-17a, 15 = 17b, 16 = 18., checked against the source

> The four kinds of corrective processes (viz., administration of emetics, of purgatives, of errhines or cerebral purgatives, and dry enemata)

tr. Avinash Chandra Kaviratna (OCR text; spacing normalized) · https://archive.org/download/BIUSante_47357/BIUSante_47357_djvu.txt

Charaka's fourfold saṁśuddhi (Sanskrit 'चतुष्प्रकारा संशुद्धिः', unnamed) is glossed by Kaviratna as four of the five karmas, omitting anuvāsana; shows that Charaka's own counts are four (śuddhi) and five (karma) in different places.

## The concept record for this term

A term entry answers what the word means. It does not answer whether the thing the word
names is settled, and often it is not. That is what the concept record is for: it sets out
the questions on which the sources disagree about this term, with each position attributed,
and states what is not established.

## Not to be confused with

- **śodhana / saṁśodhana.** The principle of expelling doṣa (WHO ITA-9.2.1); pañcakarma is one enumeration of its procedures. Charaka Su.22.18 counts four saṁśuddhis, Su.2.15 five karmas, AH Su.14.5 five śodhanas with bloodletting.
- **raktamokṣaṇa.** Bloodletting is Vāgbhaṭa's fifth śodhana (AH Su.14.5) and is absent from Charaka's five and WHO ITA-9.2.2. Any claim that 'Sushruta's panchakarma includes raktamokṣaṇa' was not verified against a Sushruta passage.
- **pūrvakarma / paścātkarma.** Preparatory (snehana, svedana) and follow-up (saṁsarjana krama) phases; Ca.Su.2.15 requires oleation and sudation before the five, so they are not among the five.
- **Siddhisthāna.** The section of Charaka dealing with the successful administration of the five karmas; sometimes loosely called 'the panchakarma sthana'.
- **Panchakarma (retreat package).** In PMID 19412555 the word names a 5-day programme including massage and diet; in the classics it names five specific evacuative procedures.

## Renderings that do not hold

- detoxification / detox programme. Imports a toxin model and, in wellness use, a package of massages and diet; the five are defined evacuative procedures with specified doṣa targets (Ca.Su.25.40: vamana for kapha, virecana for pitta, basti for vāta).
- five purification therapies including bloodletting (as Charaka's definition). That is Vāgbhaṭa's list (AH Su.14.5); Charaka's five count two enemas and exclude bloodletting (Kaviratna's footnote; WHO ITA-9.2.2).
- five actions (literal, unqualified). Correct etymology but tells the reader nothing; Kaviratna's 'five kinds of action or evacuation' at least signals the evacuative sense.

## Open questions

Recorded rather than resolved.

- The Sanskrit of Charaka's Su.2 verses preceding 15 (Kaviratna's printed 12, the drug summary) was not transcribed, so the standard number of that half-verse is unestablished.
- Whether Sushruta anywhere lists five karmas including raktamokṣaṇa was not checked; the attribution is common in textbooks and should be traced to a verse before being repeated.
- Whether Kaviratna's translation covers Siddhisthana at all was not checked in the BIUSante copy.
