## How it is translated, and whether the translation holds

Each rendering is given with the source that uses it. The assessment is ours.

### Treatment

WHO International Standard Terminologies on Ayurveda (2022) · ITA-1.4.2 'Treatment' cikitsā (no description, listed under 1.4 Specialities of Ayurveda); ITA-9.1.3 'Treatment' cikitsā: 'A treatment eradicates or normalizes impaired dosha and re-establishes all the dhatu in equilibrium, thereby restoring the normal structure and function of bodily elements.' Synonym entries ITA-9.1.4 vyādhiharam 'Disease elimination', 9.1.12 hitam, 9.1.13 vāraṇam 'Rebuffing of disease'. · comparator-standard

WHO uses the same English word for the speciality (ch. 1) and the act (ch. 9); its ch. 9 definition tracks Ca.Su.16.34 (dhātu equilibrium) rather than Ca.Su.9.5 (activity of the four pādas).

### Treatment; 'The course that is adopted for restoring the harmony of the ingredient humours is called Treatment'; 'medical treatment'; 'skilful treatment'

Kaviratna, Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana Lessons I, IX and XVI · archive.org BIUSante_47357 OCR; Lesson IX his printed 3 (standard 9.5); Lesson XVI his printed 31 (standard 16.34); Lesson I his printed 52 (standard 1.53) · public-domain-translation

Kaviratna consistently writes 'Treatment' with a capital; 'ingredient humours' is his rendering of dhātu, which in these verses means the body constituents broadly, not the three doṣas only (his own footnote restricts it to Wind, Bile, Phlegm).

### Chikitsa = 'the entire course of medical treatment'; chapter titles 'Chikitsita'

Bhishagratna, Sushruta Samhita vol. 1, Sutrasthana ch. V · wisdomlib doc122892 · public-domain-translation

Bhishagratna's sentence on the three karmas uses 'the entire course of medical treatment' for the Sanskrit 'karma'; his renderings of cikitsita chapter titles are 'treatment' or 'medical treatment'.

### therapeutics / management / disease management / therapy

Common textbook and PubMed usage (e.g. carakasamhitaonline section head 'Definition of chikitsa (therapeutics/management of disease)'; PMID 22131738 'Ayurvedic management ... Dhatusamya') · textbook-usage · our paraphrase of the source, not its words

'Management' is the dominant Indian clinical idiom; 'therapeutics' in academic writing.

tr. Sanskrit text (no translator) · https://www.carakasamhitaonline.com/index.php?title=Khuddakachatushpada_Adhyaya&action=raw

Disease = dhātu disequilibrium, health = equilibrium; the premise that makes cikitsā 'dhātusāmyārthā'.

## The concept record for this term

A term entry answers what the word means. It does not answer whether the thing the word
names is settled, and often it is not. That is what the concept record is for: it sets out
the questions on which the sources disagree about this term, with each position attributed,
and states what is not established.

- [Chikitsa Sutra (principles governing treatment choice)](https://nighantu.ageayurveda.com/concept/chikitsa-sutra/)

## Not to be confused with

- **kāyacikitsā.** The clinical speciality (WHO ITA-1.4.3 'General medicine'); cikitsā unqualified is the act or principle of treatment, and WHO's ITA-1.4.2 lists cikitsā itself among specialities, which is a classification choice of that standard.
- **bheṣaja / auṣadha.** Medicine or remedy, the means; Ca.Su.11.54 classifies auṣadha threefold (daiva-, yukti-vyapāśraya, sattvāvajaya), while cikitsā is defined by the aim (dhātusāmya).
- **upakrama.** A treatment approach or procedure; Ca.Su.22 counts six (ṣaḍ upakrama) and AH Su.14 two; cikitsā is the genus.
- **cikitsita.** Past participle used for chapter titles ('the treatment of X'); Bhishagratna renders these as 'medical treatment of'.
- **dhātusāmya-kriyā.** The purpose of the whole tantra (Ca.Su.1.53); cikitsā is the physician's activity toward it (Ca.Su.9.5, 16.34).

## Renderings that do not hold

- cure. Ca.Su.9.5 and 16.34 define cikitsā by aim and action, not outcome; WHO's ITA-9.1.4 vyādhiharam 'Cure of disease' is a separate synonym entry.
- medicine (as the discipline). Conflates cikitsā with āyurveda or with kāyacikitsā; Kaviratna uses 'Science' for the tantra and 'Treatment' for cikitsā.
- restoring the harmony of the humours (Kaviratna, read as the three doṣas). The Sanskrit is dhātu; Kaviratna's own footnote narrows 'ingredient humours' to Wind, Bile and Phlegm, which is the translator's gloss, not the verse.

## Open questions

Recorded rather than resolved.

- Whether WHO intends ITA-1.4.2 'Treatment' (under Specialities) and ITA-9.1.3 'Treatment' as one concept or two was not determined from the entries.
- No peer-reviewed paper offering an operational or measurable definition of cikitsā was found in the searches run.
