# Yavani

> Yavani (Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague) is a plant used in Ayurveda, from the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family. Not in specific WHO monographs for Trachyspermum ammi; thymol (active constituent) is recognized in pharmacopeias globally; included in Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India and Indian Pharmacopoeia.

## Key facts

- **Botanical name:** Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague
- **Family:** Apiaceae (Umbelliferae)
- **Pharmacopoeia status:** Not in specific WHO monographs for Trachyspermum ammi; thymol (active constituent) is recognized in pharmacopeias globally; included in Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India and Indian Pharmacopoeia

## Names and identification

| Language | Name |
|----------|------|
| English | Yavani |
| Latin/Botanical | *Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague* |

## Key Phytochemical Constituents

- Thymol (major active, 35-60% of essential oil)
- [Carvacrol](/glossary/compounds-a-c/#carvacrol)
- Gamma-terpinene
- Para-cymene
- Alpha-pinene and beta-pinene
- Dietary fiber, protein, and mineral matter

## How does it work?

- [Antimicrobial](/reference/antimicrobial/) activity through thymol-mediated disruption of bacterial cell membrane integrity and inhibition of efflux pumps
- [Antispasmodic](/glossary/pharmacology/#antispasmodic) and bronchodilatory effect via calcium channel blockade and anticholinergic smooth muscle relaxation
- [Antihypertensive](/glossary/pharmacology/#antihypertensive) mechanism through thymol-mediated vasodilation and ACE inhibitory activity
- Digestive stimulation through enhancement of digestive enzyme secretion and bile flow promotion

## Which traditional uses are supported by research?

- Digestive stimulant and carminative (Deepana-Pachana) - strongly validated through enhanced enzyme secretion and antispasmodic activity
- Anti-flatulence (Anaha-nashaka) - confirmed through antispasmodic and carminative effects reducing bloating and gas
- Anti-cough and respiratory (Kasa-Shvasa-hara) - validated bronchodilatory and [expectorant](/reference/expectorant/) effects
- Anti-parasitic and anthelmintic (Krimighna) - confirmed nematicidal and anthelmintic activities of thymol against intestinal parasites

## What do recent clinical trials show?

*3 further claims previously listed here could not be traced to a published paper and have been removed. An absence here means we could not identify the source, not that no work exists.*

## Recent safety updates

- Generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for culinary use; essential oil at high concentration may cause skin and mucosal irritation
- Excessive consumption may cause photosensitivity, nausea, and headache; thymol in large doses is hepatotoxic; not recommended in large medicinal doses during pregnancy due to uterotonic effects

## What is it made of?

### Key Active Markers

- Carvacrol
- Thymol
- Gamma-terpinene
- Para-cymene
- Alpha-pinene and beta-pinene
- Dietary fiber

**Analytical Methods:** HPLC fingerprinting, TLC (identity), LC-MS/MS (marker quantification)

## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Churna (seed powder), Kwatha (decoction), Essential oil, Capsule, Tablet, Ark (distillate), Satva (concentrated essence)

**Standard Dosage:** 1-3 g seed powder twice daily with warm water; 2-5 drops essential oil in warm water; 15-30 mL Ark twice daily

**Bioavailability:** Thymol (primary active, 35-60% of essential oil) has excellent oral bioavailability (~60-70%) with rapid GI absorption. Undergoes hepatic glucuronidation and sulfation with renal excretion. p-Cymene (precursor/co-constituent) is well absorbed but rapidly metabolized. gamma-Terpinene has moderate bioavailability. Thymol has significant antibacterial activity even at sub-MIC systemic concentrations. Local GI antimicrobial and carminative effects are pharmacologically important independent of systemic absorption.

**Optimal Timing:** After meals for digestive/carminative action; before meals for appetite stimulation; [Ajwain](/herb/ajwain/) water (Ark) throughout the day for flatulence

**Standardized Extract:** Essential oil ([Ajwain](/herb/ajwain/) oil) standardized to >40% thymol by GC-FID; seed extract standardized to >3% thymol by HPLC; Satva (thymol crystals): >95% purity

**Shelf Life:** Whole seeds: 24-36 months; Powder: 12-18 months; Essential oil: 24-36 months; Satva (thymol crystals): 36-48 months; Ark: 12-18 months

**Storage:** Whole seeds in airtight containers at 15-25 deg C. Essential oil in amber glass, tightly sealed. Thymol crystals in airtight glass containers away from heat (melting point 49-51 deg C). Ark in glass bottles, protected from light.

**Marker Compounds:** Thymol, p-Cymene, gamma-Terpinene, alpha-Pinene, beta-Pinene, Carvacrol, Terpinen-4-ol, [Limonene](/glossary/compounds-g-l/#limonene)

### Extraction Methods

- Steam distillation for essential oil (Ajwain oil)
- Hydrodistillation
- Hydroethanolic extraction (60-70% ethanol)
- Supercritical CO2 extraction
- Aqueous decoction
- Distillation for Ark preparation

### Synergistic Combinations

- [Saindhava Lavana](/herb/saindhava-lavana/) (rock salt) - carminative and digestive synergy (Ajwain + Namak)
- [Haritaki](/herb/haritaki/) - digestive and [laxative](/reference/laxative/) combination (Yavanyadi Churna)
