# Trikatu

> Trikatu is classified in Ayurveda as Deepaniya (Appetizer), Amapachana (Toxin digester), from the Piperaceae + Zingiberaceae family. Parts used: long pepper + black pepper + dry ginger. Synergistic combination — piperine enhances absorption of other herbs and foods.

## Key facts

- **Family:** Piperaceae + Zingiberaceae
- **Ayurvedic category:** Deepaniya (Appetizer), Amapachana (Toxin digester)

## Names and identification

| Language | Name |
|----------|------|
| English | Trikatu |
| Common Names | Trikatu, Three Pungents |
| Hindi | Trikatu |
| Sanskrit | Trikatu, Tryushana |
| Latin/Botanical | *Compound: Piper longum + P. nigrum + [Zingiber](/herb/zingiber/) officinale* |

## Parts Used

- Long pepper + [Black pepper](/herb/black-pepper/) + Dry [ginger](/herb/ginger/) (equal parts)

## Dosha Effects

| Dosha | Effect |
|-------|--------|
| **Vata** | Decreases |
| **Kapha** | Decreases |
| **Pitta** | Increases |

## Key Phytochemical Constituents

- [Piperine](/reference/piperine/) (from both peppers)
- Gingerols/Shogaols (from [ginger](/herb/ginger/))

## Therapeutic Actions (Karma)

- Bioavailability enhancer
- Digestive stimulant
- Thermogenic
- [Expectorant](/reference/expectorant/)
- Metabolism booster

## How is it used traditionally?

Synergistic combination — piperine enhances absorption of other herbs and foods. Used for Agnimandya (weak digestion), Ama (metabolic toxins), Kasa (cough), and Sthaulya (obesity). Often added to other formulations as bioenhancer.

## Where is it described in the classical texts?

- Charaka Samhita
- Sharangadhara Samhita

## Recommended Dosage

Powder: 1-3g/day before meals with honey

## Safety, contraindications and cautions

- Pitta disorders
- Gastritis/ulcers
- Pregnancy
- Bleeding disorders

## What is it made of?

**Part(s) Analyzed:** Long pepper + [Black pepper](/herb/black-pepper/) + Dry [ginger](/herb/ginger/) (equal parts)

### Key Active Markers

- Piperine
- Gingerols
- Shogaols
- Ginger

**Analytical Methods:** HPLC fingerprinting, TLC (identity), LC-MS/MS (marker quantification)

## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Churna (powder), Vati (tablet), Capsule, [Guggulu](/formulation/guggulu/) combination, Kwatha additive

**Standard Dosage:** 0.5-1 g powder twice daily with honey or warm water; 250-500 mg tablet/capsule twice daily

**Bioavailability:** Trikatu is itself a bioenhancer formulation. Piperine (from Maricha and [Pippali](/herb/pippali/)) inhibits CYP3A4, CYP1A2, P-glycoprotein, and intestinal glucuronidation, increasing bioavailability of co-administered compounds by 30-200%. Gingerols and shogaols from Shunthi have moderate bioavailability (~30-40%). Piperine has good oral bioavailability (~50-60%) with rapid absorption (Tmax 1-2 hours). The combination provides thermogenic effects that enhance GI blood flow and absorption.

**Optimal Timing:** Before meals (15-30 minutes) for digestive stimulation and bioenhancer effect; avoid at bedtime due to thermogenic activity

**Standardized Extract:** Blended powder standardized to >5% piperine and >2% gingerols by HPLC; concentrated extract (10:1) standardized to >15% piperine

**Shelf Life:** Churna: 12-18 months; Tablets/Capsules: 24-36 months; Standardized extract: 36 months

**Storage:** Airtight containers at 15-25 deg C, protected from moisture and light. Piperine is photosensitive; use opaque packaging. Powder tends to absorb moisture; include desiccant sachets.

**Marker Compounds:** Piperine, [Piperlongumine](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#piperlongumine), [Piperanine](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#piperanine), 6-[Gingerol](/glossary/compounds-d-g/#gingerol), 8-Gingerol, 10-Gingerol, 6-Shogaol, [Zingerone](/glossary/compounds-t-z/#zingerone)

### Extraction Methods

- Simple mechanical blending of three ingredient powders (1:1:1 ratio)
- Hydroethanolic extraction (60-70% ethanol) for standardized extract
- Supercritical CO2 extraction for piperine-enriched fraction
- Aqueous decoction (traditional)

### Synergistic Combinations

- Acts as universal bioenhancer (Yogavahi) for virtually all Ayurvedic formulations
- [Triphala](/herb/triphala/) + Trikatu - digestive and metabolic combination (Trifala Trikatu)
- [Guggulu](/formulation/guggulu/) - enhanced anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering formulations
- [Sitopaladi Churna](/formulation/sitopaladi-churna/) - respiratory formula containing Trikatu components
- [Chitrak](/herb/chitrak/) (Plumbago zeylanica) - enhanced thermogenic action
