# Morning Glory

> Morning Glory is a substance used in the Ayurvedic materia medica. CAUTION: Some species contain lysergic acid amide (LSA). Bioavailability: Ergoline alkaloids (LSA, ergine) in seeds have high oral bioavailability (~40-60%) with rapid CNS penetration - this is a SAFETY concern.

## Names and identification

## What is it made of?

### Key Active Markers

- Derived from constituent herbs (see individual herb profiles)
- Standardized on primary bioactive markers

**Analytical Methods:** HPLC fingerprinting, TLC (identity), LC-MS/MS (marker quantification)

## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Churna (seed powder, micro-dosed), Kwatha (leaf/root decoction), Capsules (standardized extract), Topical paste, Taila (medicated oil)

**Standard Dosage:** Seeds: NOT recommended for internal use due to ergot alkaloid content. Leaf/Root: 3-5 g powder per day; 50-100 mL decoction of leaves twice daily; topical as directed. CAUTION: Some species contain lysergic acid amide (LSA).

**Bioavailability:** Ergoline [alkaloids](/glossary/compounds-1-a/#alkaloids) (LSA, ergine) in seeds have high oral bioavailability (~40-60%) with rapid CNS penetration - this is a SAFETY concern. Leaf and root preparations contain different phytochemistry with [flavonoids](/reference/flavonoids/) and glycoresins showing moderate absorption. Purgative glycoresins act locally on intestinal mucosa.

**Optimal Timing:** Morning on empty stomach for purgative action (under medical supervision); topical application as needed; specific timing per Virechana Panchakarma protocol

**Standardized Extract:** Leaf extract (8:1 aqueous) free from ergoline alkaloids (verified by LC-MS). Root extract standardized to 3-5% glycoresins for controlled purgative action. Certificate of analysis must confirm absence of LSA/ergine.

**Shelf Life:** Dried leaf/root powder: 18 months. Capsules: 24 months. Topical preparations: 18 months.

**Storage:** Store below 25 deg C in airtight containers. Protect from light and moisture. Restricted access storage for raw seed material (if held for research). All finished products labeled with appropriate warnings.

**Marker Compounds:** Glycoresins (turpethinic acids, if I. turpethum), [Scopoletin](/glossary/compounds-q-t/#scopoletin), [Umbelliferone](/glossary/compounds-t-z/#umbelliferone), [Kaempferol](/reference/kaempferol/), Caffeic acid, LSA/Ergine (MUST be absent in formulations)

### Extraction Methods

- Aqueous decoction of leaves/roots (safer parts)
- Hydroalcoholic extraction (50% ethanol)
- Leaf juice expression
- Oil infusion for topical preparations

### Synergistic Combinations

- [Trivrit](/herb/trivrit/) (purgative combination for Virechana)
- [Danti](/herb/danti/) (cathartic synergy)
- [Eranda](/herb/eranda/)/Castor ([laxative](/reference/laxative/) combination)
- [Haridra](/herb/haridra/) (anti-inflammatory for topical use)
