## Dosage forms and preparation

**Standard Dosage:** Nasya: pinch of fine powder (125-250 mg) per nostril; 2-3 g powder orally twice daily; 30-50 mL decoction

**Bioavailability:** Nasal administration provides direct absorption through nasal mucosa bypassing first-pass metabolism — rapid onset of action within 5-15 minutes. Oral bioavailability of [alkaloids](/glossary/compounds-1-a/#alkaloids) is moderate. Sneeze-inducing (errhine/sternutatory) compounds are active at very low nasal doses. Absorption enhanced by Nasya oil pre-treatment ([Anu Taila](/formulation/anu-taila/) lubrication of nasal passages).

**Optimal Timing:** Nasya: morning on empty stomach after oil massage of face (classical Poorvakarma); oral preparations: after meals

**Standardized Extract:** Ultra-fine powder (Vastra Galita grade, <75 micron particle size) standardized for sternutatory activity; oral extract to minimum 2% total alkaloids

**Shelf Life:** 12 months for Nasya powder (fine particle size increases surface area and degradation); 24 months for oral powder; 18 months for capsules
