## Recent safety updates

- EXTREMELY TOXIC - Abrin in seed kernels is one of the most toxic naturally occurring substances; fatal dose as low as 0.1-1 microgram/kg IV; the hard seed coat prevents toxin release when seeds are swallowed whole
- In Ayurvedic practice, only the purified (Shodhit) seed coat or processed preparations are used; raw crushed seeds are lethal and have caused numerous fatalities worldwide
- Classified as a potential bioterrorism agent; handling crushed seeds requires extreme caution; any Ayurvedic use must follow strict Shodhana protocols under expert supervision

## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Churna (powder), Bhasma (calcined ash), Kshara (alkali preparation), Capsule, External paste

**Standard Dosage:** 500 mg - 2 g powder twice daily; 125-250 mg Kshara with honey or warm water

**Bioavailability:** Mineral-rich alkaline preparation. Kshara form provides highly bioavailable [potassium](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#potassium) and calcium salts. Absorption enhanced when taken with acidic media (lemon juice, Amalaki juice). Chelated mineral forms show superior absorption compared to raw mineral preparations.

**Optimal Timing:** After meals with warm water or honey; Kshara formulations best taken between meals

**Standardized Extract:** Kshara preparation standardized to minimum 70% water-soluble alkaline salts; pH 9.5-11.0; potassium carbonate content >40%

**Shelf Life:** 36 months for Kshara preparations; 24 months for powder; indefinite for properly prepared Bhasma

**Storage:** Store in airtight, moisture-proof glass or HDPE containers. Kshara is highly hygroscopic — desiccant packets required. Keep at 15-30°C away from moisture.
