# Jati

> Jati (Jasminum officinale) is a plant used in Ayurveda. Linalool has high oral bioavailability (~70%) and crosses blood-brain barrier. Secoiridoid glycosides are hydrolyzed by gut enzymes to absorbable aglycones. Nasal administration (Nasya) provides direct CNS access bypassing first-pass metabolism.

## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Taila (essential oil), Churna (flower/leaf powder), Kashayam (decoction), Capsule, Swarasa (leaf juice), Nasya oil (nasal administration)

**Standard Dosage:** 3-5g leaf powder twice daily; 30-60ml flower decoction; 5-10 drops essential oil (external or aromatherapy); 2-3 drops Nasya oil per nostril

**Bioavailability:** Jasminum grandiflorum (Jati/Jasmine) flowers and leaves contain secoiridoids, [flavonoids](/reference/flavonoids/), and essential oil (jasminol, [linalool](/glossary/compounds-l-o/#linalool), benzyl acetate). Linalool has high oral bioavailability (~70%) and crosses blood-brain barrier. Secoiridoid [glycosides](/glossary/compounds-g-l/#glycosides) are hydrolyzed by gut [enzymes](/glossary/compounds-d-g/#enzymes) to absorbable aglycones. Nasal administration (Nasya) provides direct CNS access bypassing first-pass metabolism.

**Optimal Timing:** Nasya: morning on empty stomach. Internal use: after meals. Aromatherapy: as needed for relaxation.

**Standardized Extract:** Jasmine absolute (solvent-extracted, minimum 0.3% [jasmone](/glossary/compounds-g-l/#jasmone)); leaf hydroalcoholic extract standardized to total flavonoid content; Nasya oil prepared in [sesame oil](/glossary/concepts-m-y/#tila-taila) base

**Shelf Life:** 2 years (leaf powder); 3 years (jasmine absolute, sealed); 2 years (Nasya oil); 2 years (capsule)

**Storage:** Essential oil/absolute in dark amber glass, tightly sealed, below 20°C. Leaf powder in airtight containers. Protect all preparations from light and heat.

**Marker Compounds:** Jasmone (cis-jasmone), Linalool, Benzyl acetate, Methyl jasmonate, Jasminin (secoiridoid), [Oleuropein](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#oleuropein)

### Extraction Methods

- Solvent extraction (hexane/petroleum ether for concrete, then ethanol for absolute)
- Enfleurage (traditional cold-fat extraction for jasmine absolute)
- Hydrodistillation (low yield, <0.1%)
- CO2 supercritical extraction for high-quality absolute
- Aqueous decoction of leaves
- Oil maceration for Nasya/Taila preparations

### Synergistic Combinations

- With [Chandana](/herb/chandana/) (sandalwood) for Pitta-pacifying aromatic therapy
- With [Brahmi](/herb/brahmi/) oil for Nasya for mental clarity
- With Kumari (aloe) for skin conditions
- With Nilotpala (lotus) for cooling formulations
