## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Churna (bark powder), Kashayam (bark decoction), Niryasa (gum — Babool gum), Tablet, Capsule, Manjan (tooth powder), Kwatha (concentrated decoction), Lepa (bark paste — external)

**Standard Dosage:** 3-6g bark powder twice daily; 50-100ml decoction; 1-3g gum with water; tooth powder as needed for dental hygiene

**Bioavailability:** Moderate oral bioavailability. Acacia nilotica (Babool/Babul) bark is rich in tannins (12-20% gallic acid-based tannins) and condensed tannins ([proanthocyanidins](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#proanthocyanidins)). Gallic acid has good oral bioavailability (~70%). Tannins form complexes with salivary [proteins](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#proteins) — oral health effects are partly local/topical. Gum Arabic-type polysaccharides (from gum exudate) act as prebiotics in the colon. [Piperine](/reference/piperine/) co-administration enhances absorption of phenolic compounds.

**Optimal Timing:** Bark decoction as gargle morning and evening for oral health. Internal: before meals for digestive astringent action. Tooth powder at bedtime.

**Standardized Extract:** Bark extract (8:1) standardized to minimum 25% total tannins (as gallic acid equivalent). Gum: pharmaceutical grade per IP monograph (moisture <15%, ash <4%, acid-insoluble ash <0.5%). Pod extract with minimum 20% tannins.

**Shelf Life:** 2 years (bark powder); 3 years (gum); 3 years (capsules/tablets); 2 years (tooth powder); 5 years (Ghana Vati)

**Storage:** Bark powder in airtight containers, cool and dry. Gum in dry, ventilated storage — susceptible to insect infestation (fumigate naturally with [neem](/herb/neem/)). Below 25°C, RH < 60%.
