## How does it work?

- [Sesame oil](/glossary/concepts-m-y/#tila-taila) lipid medium serves as a superior transdermal delivery vehicle for lipophilic [saponins](/reference/saponins/), [lignans](/glossary/compounds-g-l/#lignans), and phenolics, achieving therapeutic tissue concentrations at musculoskeletal sites
- [Dashamoola](/herb/dashamoola/)'s combined action of 10 root extracts provides broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory activity through simultaneous inhibition of multiple inflammatory pathways (COX, LOX, NF-kB)
- [Tagara](/herb/tagara/)'s [valepotriates](/glossary/compounds-t-z/#valepotriates) and [Jatamansi](/herb/jatamansi/)'s nardostachin provide dual nervine sedative and [antispasmodic](/glossary/pharmacology/#antispasmodic) action, addressing both the pain and spasm components of Vata disorders
- [Ashwagandha](/herb/ashwagandha/)'s [withanolides](/glossary/compounds-t-z/#withanolides) and [Bala](/herb/bala/)'s [ephedrine](/glossary/compounds-d-g/#ephedrine) [alkaloids](/glossary/compounds-1-a/#alkaloids) synergistically strengthen neuromuscular tissue while providing [analgesic](/reference/analgesic/) effects

## Which traditional uses are supported by research?

- Vatavyadhi (80+ Vata-related conditions) including paralysis, tremors, and muscular atrophy - supported by multiple observational studies showing significant improvement in neuromuscular function
- Lower back pain and lumbar spasm - validated by BHU pilot trial (2019) showing 60% pain improvement with nightly oleation and Swedana over 4 weeks
- Osteoarthritis stiffness and swelling - validated by observational studies confirming significant symptom reduction after 21 days of twice-daily Abhyanga treatment

## What do recent clinical trials show?

*3 further claims previously listed here could not be traced to a published paper and have been removed. Classical formulations are researched largely in journals that PubMed does not index, so an absence here reflects the reach of the index rather than the state of the evidence.*

## Recent safety updates

- Generally safe for external application (Abhyanga, Basti, Nasya). Balanced formulation suitable for regular use. Mild skin warmth is normal after application. Patch test recommended for sensitive individuals. No significant drug interactions for external use reported.
- Internal administration (Basti, oral use) should only be under Ayurvedic practitioner supervision. Not recommended during acute Pitta flare-ups or fever. Caution in individuals on anticoagulant or anti-inflammatory medications. The Maha Narayana version is more potent but also heavier and less suitable for daily use.

## What is it made of?

### Mineral/Elemental Profile

- **Primary component:** Mineral-derived preparation
- **Note:** Composition varies by specific preparation method

**Analytical Methods:** XRD, ICP-OES, SEM-EDS

## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Thailam (medicated [sesame oil](/glossary/concepts-m-y/#tila-taila)), External application

**Standard Dosage:** External massage and Basti: 30-60ml

**Bioavailability:** Oil base ([sesame oil](/glossary/concepts-m-y/#tila-taila)) enhances dermal absorption of lipophilic active compounds; for internal thailams, oil base enhances absorption of fat-soluble actives

**Optimal Timing:** External: before bath or at bedtime. Internal: before meals

**Shelf Life:** 3 years (medicated oils per ASU guidelines)

**Storage:** Airtight amber glass/HDPE container, room temperature, protected from light

**Marker Compounds:** Shatavarin, Withanolides

**Quality Parameters:** Acid value <5, saponification value per base oil specs, refractive index, moisture NMT 0.5%, specific gravity, marker: Shatavarin, Withanolides

**Vehicle (Anupana):** External: massage into affected area. Internal: with warm water/milk

### Synergistic Combinations

- Key herbs: [Shatavari](/herb/shatavari/), [Ashwagandha](/herb/ashwagandha/), [Dashamoola](/herb/dashamoola/); oil base acts as lipid carrier for enhanced tissue penetration
