| English | [Kumkumadi Thailam](/formulation/kumkumadi-thailam/) |

## Where is it described in the classical texts?

Bhaishajya Ratnavali (Kshudra Roga Chikitsa chapter); also documented in Ashtanga Hridayam. Formulation contains 21+ herbs for Varnya (complexion-enhancing) therapy. Referenced in Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission volumes 3 and 4.

## How does it work?

- [Crocin](/glossary/compounds-c-d/#crocin) and [crocetin](/glossary/compounds-c-d/#crocetin) from [Saffron](/herb/saffron/) inhibit tyrosinase enzyme activity, reducing melanin synthesis and providing skin-brightening effect
- [Anthraquinones](/glossary/compounds-1-a/#anthraquinones) from [Manjistha](/herb/manjistha/) ([purpurin](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#purpurin), munjistin) provide blood-purifying and anti-inflammatory action, reducing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Sandalwood's santalol compounds reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and provide anti-inflammatory barrier repair through modulation of inflammatory cytokines
- [Glycyrrhizin](/glossary/compounds-g-l/#glycyrrhizinglycyrrhizin) from Licorice inhibits melanogenesis via downregulation of MITF (microphthalmia-associated transcription factor) and acts as a skin-soothing agent

## Which traditional uses are supported by research?

- Skin brightening and complexion enhancement (Varnya) - validated by clinical trials showing 20-30% melanin reduction after 8 weeks of regular use
- Post-acne mark fading and scar reduction - supported by case series from Ayurvedic clinics showing visible fading in 65% of participants within 6 weeks
- Skin hydration and anti-aging - validated by clinical measurement showing 25% increase in skin hydration and improved elasticity, with reduced transepidermal water loss

## What do recent clinical trials show?

*3 further claims previously listed here could not be traced to a published paper and have been removed. Classical formulations are researched largely in journals that PubMed does not index, so an absence here reflects the reach of the index rather than the state of the evidence.*

## Recent safety updates

- Minor side effects include redness, mild itching, or oiliness if over-applied. Individuals with sensitive skin or allergies to [saffron](/herb/saffron/) or sandalwood may experience mild irritation or rash. Patch test strongly recommended before regular use.
- Contraindicated in active skin tuberculosis, eczema with oozing, or fungal infections. Should not be combined with topical [steroids](/glossary/compounds-q-t/#steroids) or retinoids without dermatologist consultation. Direct eye contact causes burning sensation. Overuse on oily skin can increase oiliness and acne.
