## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Taila (medicated oil for oral/dental use), Mouthwash (modern), Oral gel (modern)

**Standard Dosage:** For Gandusha/Kavala (oil pulling): 15-20 mL held in mouth for 5-15 minutes, then spat out. For local application: apply to gums with finger or cotton, as per Sahasrayogam/AFI

**Bioavailability:** Buccal/gingival absorption provides direct delivery to oral mucosa. Oil pulling (Gandusha) allows 5-15 minutes of mucosal contact time. [Tannins](/reference/tannins/) from [Khadira](/herb/khadira/) and [Bakula](/herb/bakula/) have astringent action on gingival tissues. [Sesame oil](/glossary/concepts-m-y/#tila-taila) base has inherent [antimicrobial](/reference/antimicrobial/) properties (sesaminol).

**Optimal Timing:** Morning on empty stomach for Gandusha (oil pulling). Local application after meals for gum conditions.

**Shelf Life:** 3 years from date of manufacture as per ASU guidelines for Taila

**Storage:** Store in amber glass bottles in a cool, dry place. Temperature not exceeding 25°C. Oral-grade preparation requires enhanced cleanliness standards.
