# Dashamula

> Dashamula is a classical Ayurvedic kashaya, a water decoction. Classical group-dravya (Sanskrit dasha = ten, mula = root) — the ten-root formula cited in Charaka, Sushruta, Ashtanga Hridaya and Sharangadhara as the primary Vata-pacifying root ensemble.

Classical group-dravya (Sanskrit *dasha* = ten, *mula* = root) — the ten-root formula cited in Charaka, Sushruta, Ashtanga Hridaya and Sharangadhara as the primary Vata-pacifying root ensemble. Appears across Ayurvedic kashayas, arishtas, tailas, ghritas and as the decoction base in classical Avaleha pharmacy, including [Chyawanprash](/formulation/chyawanprash/) and Chyawanprash Royale.

## The ten roots

Divided into **Brhatpancamula** (five greater roots, large-tree sources) and **Laghupancamula** (five lesser roots, shrub/herb sources):

### Brhatpancamula

| 2 | Agnimantha | *Premna serratifolia* (syn. *P. integrifolia*) |
| 3 | Shyonaka | *Oroxylum indicum* |
| 4 | Gambhari | *Gmelina arborea* |
| 5 | Patala / Patali | *Stereospermum suaveolens* (syn. *S. colais*) |

### Laghupancamula

| # | Name | Botanical |
|---|------|-----------|
| 6 | Shalaparni | *Desmodium gangeticum* |
| 7 | Prishniparni | *Uraria picta* |
| 8 | Brihati | *Solanum indicum* |
| 9 | Kantakari | *Solanum xanthocarpum* (syn. *S. virginianum*) |
| 10 | Gokshura | *Tribulus terrestris* |

## Classical references

- *Charaka Samhita* — Sutrasthana (Shatashloka); Chikitsasthana (Vata-vyadhi, Rajayakshma)
- *Sushruta Samhita* — Sutrasthana (Dravya-gana vibhaga)
- *Ashtanga Hridaya* — Sutrasthana 15 (Shodhanadi gana sangraha)
- *Sharangadhara Samhita* — Madhyama Khanda (Kashaya kalpana)

## Pharmacology

Broad anti-inflammatory, analgesic, bronchodilator, and immunomodulatory activity demonstrated across animal and early human studies. Active classes include iridoid glycosides (Bilva, Patala), flavonoids (Shyonaka baicalein), saponins (Gokshura), and alkaloids (Brihati, Kantakari solasodine).

## Use in Chyawanprash

Dashamula is a core component of the **kashaya phase** — the ten-root decoction in which [Amalaki](/herb/amla/) fruit is boiled during Phase 1 of classical Chyawanprash pharmacy. In Royale positioning, Dashamula is classified as **standard high-quality classical-grade**, not a Royale-tier premium-provenance ingredient.

## Safety

Classical group formulation — safe at standard kashaya dosing (15–30 ml decoction, 1–3 g dried powder per dose). Kantakari / Brihati alkaloids warrant caution in pregnancy and in high-dose chronic use. Gokshura is diuretic — monitor in renal disease.
