- [Ashwagandha](/herb/ashwagandha/) (Withania somnifera / Winter Cherry root)
- [Manjistha](/herb/manjistha/) (Rubia cordifolia root)
- [Durva](/herb/durva/) (Cynodon dactylon / Bermuda grass)

- [Sariva](/herb/sariva/) (Hemidesmus indicus / Indian Sarsaparilla root)
- [Sesame oil](/glossary/concepts-m-y/#tila-taila) ([Tila](/herb/tila/) taila) base

## Where is it described in the classical texts?

Sahasrayogam (Taila Prakarana). A classic Brimhana (nourishing/strengthening) formulation in Kerala Ayurvedic tradition. Also referenced in Ashtanga Hridayam.

## How does it work?

- [Withanolides](/glossary/compounds-t-z/#withanolides) from [Ashwagandha](/herb/ashwagandha/) enhance protein synthesis in muscle tissue, providing anabolic and [adaptogenic](/reference/adaptogenic/) effects that counteract muscle wasting and debility
- [Ephedrine](/glossary/compounds-d-g/#ephedrine) [alkaloids](/glossary/compounds-1-a/#alkaloids) from [Bala](/herb/bala/) (Sida cordifolia) strengthen neuromuscular junctions and provide [analgesic](/reference/analgesic/) activity via adrenergic receptor pathways
- Gamma-[sitosterol](/glossary/compounds-q-t/#sitosterol) and [campesterol](/glossary/compounds-a-c/#campesterol) (identified by GC-MS) exert anti-inflammatory effects by modulating prostaglandin synthesis and stabilizing cell membranes
- Vitamin E and beta-eudesmol (identified in GC-MS analysis) provide potent [antioxidant](/reference/antioxidant/) protection, reducing oxidative stress in weakened or recovering tissues

## Which traditional uses are supported by research?

- Muscle weakness and general debility recovery - validated by RCT (2019) showing 30% pain score reduction with daily abhyanga over 4 weeks
- Post-illness recovery and Dhatukshaya (tissue depletion) - supported by GC-MS identification (2024) of anabolic [phytosterols](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#phytosterols) and vitamin E in the formulation
- Neuralgia and neuromuscular pain conditions - supported by pharmacological evidence of anti-inflammatory and neuromuscular-strengthening properties from dual action of [Bala](/herb/bala/) and [Ashwagandha](/herb/ashwagandha/)

## What do recent clinical trials show?

- Sudhan A, Prabhu K, Jones S and others 2024. [GC-MS Analysis of the Ayurvedic Oil Balaswagandhadi Tailam](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40061637/). *Journal of pharmacy & bioallied sciences*. PMID [40061637](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40061637/) · [doi:10.4103/jpbs.jpbs_839_24](https://doi.org/10.4103/jpbs.jpbs_839_24)
Published in PMC, the GC-MS study identified key bioactive compounds including vitamin E, campesterol, gamma-sitosterol, beta-eudesmol, and multiple fatty acid esters, validating the presence of pharmacologically active molecules in the traditional formulation.

## Recent safety updates

- Generally safe for external use in adults. Well-tolerated for body massage. Slight warmth after application is normal. No significant adverse effects reported in literature. Patch test recommended for those with sensitive skin.
- Not specifically tested for use during pregnancy - practitioner consultation advised. May cause mild oiliness on skin; wash off after adequate absorption time. No known drug interactions for external use.

## What is it made of?

### Key Active Markers

- Derived from constituent herbs (see individual herb profiles)
- Standardized on primary bioactive markers

**Analytical Methods:** HPLC fingerprinting, TLC (identity), LC-MS/MS (marker quantification)

## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Thailam (medicated oil for external use), Capsules (modern, for internal use variant)

**Standard Dosage:** External: sufficient quantity for Abhyanga (body massage). Internal: 5-10 mL as per physician direction. As per AFI/Sahasrayogam.

**Bioavailability:** Oil base provides excellent transdermal absorption during Abhyanga (massage). Massage enhances blood flow and promotes deeper penetration of actives. Withanolides are lipophilic and absorb well through skin. Milk processing enriches with [phospholipids](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#phospholipids) that enhance skin penetration.

**Optimal Timing:** External: morning before bath (Abhyanga) or evening. Internal: before meals or as directed.

**Shelf Life:** 3 years from date of manufacture as per ASU guidelines for Taila preparations

**Storage:** Store in amber glass or HDPE bottles in a cool, dry place. Protect from direct sunlight. Temperature not exceeding 25°C.

**Marker Compounds:** Withanolide A, Withaferin A, Ephedrine, [Sesamin](/glossary/compounds-q-t/#sesamin), Beta-sitosterol

**Quality Parameters:** Acid value (<5), peroxide value (<10), saponification value, [iodine](/glossary/compounds-g-l/#iodine) value, refractive index, specific gravity, moisture content, rancidity test negative, HPTLC for withanolides and ephedrine equivalents, microbial limits, heavy metals

**Vehicle (Anupana):** Not applicable for external use. For internal use: warm milk or warm water.
