Bhaishajya Ratnavali (13th century CE), where it was called Baladwaya Arishta or nourishing fermented tonic. Also referenced in Charaka Samhita for Balya (strength-promoting) indications.

## How does it work?

- Nervine tonic action of [Bala](/herb/bala/) (Sida cordifolia) strengthens neural tissue and improves nerve conduction
- [Adaptogenic](/reference/adaptogenic/) and [immunomodulatory](/reference/immunomodulatory/) effects of [Ashwagandha](/herb/ashwagandha/) enhance stress resistance and immune function
- Anti-inflammatory and [analgesic](/reference/analgesic/) properties reduce joint and muscle pain in rheumatic conditions
- Nutritive and restorative (Balya) action improves overall body strength and organ nourishment

## Which traditional uses are supported by research?

- General debility and weakness post-illness - validated by adaptogenic and nutritive mechanisms
- Rheumatic pain and joint disorders - supported by anti-inflammatory studies in arthritis models
- Post-paralysis rehabilitation - traditional use corroborated by nervine tonic properties of [Bala](/herb/bala/)
- Hemiplegia support - supported by [neuroprotective](/reference/neuroprotective/) and neurotransmitter modulation studies

## Recent safety updates

- Generally safe without known serious side effects at recommended dose (12-24 ml twice daily with equal water). Some individuals with gastric sensitivity may experience stomach irritation or burning.
- Contains 5-10% self-generated alcohol. Caution in liver disorders, pregnancy, and pediatric use. Sida cordifolia contains [ephedrine](/glossary/compounds-d-g/#ephedrine) [alkaloids](/glossary/compounds-1-a/#alkaloids) in trace amounts; monitor in hypertensive patients.

## What is it made of?

### Mineral/Elemental Profile

- **Primary component:** Mineral-derived preparation
- **Note:** Composition varies by specific preparation method

**Analytical Methods:** XRD, ICP-OES, SEM-EDS

## Dosage forms and preparation
