## Key facts

- **Pharmacopoeia status:** Amrita (Guduchi) monograph in Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (API); Amritaprasha Ghrita listed in Ayurvedic Formulary of India; formulation standards regulated under PCIM&H

## Names and identification

| Language | Name |
|----------|------|
| English | Amrita [Ghrita](/herb/ghrita/)|Amrita Ghrita Amritaprasha [Ghrita](/herb/ghrita/)|Amritaprasha Ghrita |

## Where is it described in the classical texts?

Bhavishya Ratnavali (Amrita [Ghrita](/herb/ghrita/)|Amrita Ghrita); Rasaratna Samuccaya; Yogaratnakara (preparations for enhancing Ojas); Ashtanga Hridayam (Amritaprasha [Ghrita](/herb/ghrita/)|Amritaprasha Ghrita)

## How does it work?

- [Guduchi](/herb/guduchi/) ([berberine](/glossary/compounds-a-c/#berberine), [tinosporin](/glossary/compounds-t-z/#tinosporin)) activates macrophages and enhances phagocytic activity, boosting innate immune response
- Tinospora [polysaccharides](/glossary/compounds-o-q/#polysaccharides) stimulate both humoral and cell-mediated immunity, increasing immunoglobulin production
- Jeevaniya Gana herbs collectively provide Ojas-building and tissue-nourishing action across all seven Dhatus
- [Adaptogenic](/reference/adaptogenic/) herbs ([Ashwagandha](/herb/ashwagandha/), [Shatavari](/herb/shatavari/), [Bala](/herb/bala/)) modulate HPA axis, reducing stress-induced immunosuppression
- Ghee base delivers immunoactive compounds to deep tissues and enhances absorption of lipophilic phytochemicals

## Which traditional uses are supported by research?

- Vyadhikshamatva (immunity enhancement): RCT validates 22% increase in serum [immunoglobulins](/glossary/compounds-g-l/#immunoglobulins) in elderly subjects
- [Rasayana](/reference/rasayana/) (rejuvenation): [immunomodulatory](/reference/immunomodulatory/) and adaptogenic activities confirmed in preclinical studies supporting classical rejuvenative claims
- Jvara (fever management): [Guduchi](/herb/guduchi/)'s immunostimulant and [antipyretic](/reference/antipyretic/) activities well-validated pharmacologically
- Ojas Vardhana (vital energy enhancement): traditional use for enhancing strength, immunity, and longevity supported by clinical evidence

## What do recent clinical trials show?

*3 further claims previously listed here could not be traced to a published paper and have been removed. Classical formulations are researched largely in journals that PubMed does not index, so an absence here reflects the reach of the index rather than the state of the evidence.*

## Recent safety updates

- Clinical study confirms safety in elderly participants with 22% immunoglobulin increase; no adverse effects at 5ml daily for 8 weeks
- [Guduchi](/herb/guduchi/) generally recognized as safe with well-established toxicological profile; rare reports of autoimmune exacerbation in predisposed individuals
- Multiple ingredients require quality-assured sourcing; honey should not be heated above 40 degrees C per Ayurvedic principles

## What is it made of?

### Mineral/Elemental Profile

- **Primary component:** Mineral-derived preparation
- **Note:** Composition varies by specific preparation method

**Analytical Methods:** XRD, ICP-OES, SEM-EDS

## Dosage forms and preparation

**Dosage Forms:** Ghrita (medicated ghee), Soft gelatin capsules (modern)

**Standard Dosage:** 6-12 g (1-2 teaspoons) twice daily, as per AFI Part I

**Bioavailability:** Ghee (lipid base) provides excellent absorption of both lipophilic and hydrophilic compounds via micelle formation. [Guduchi](/herb/guduchi/) polysaccharides and [alkaloids](/glossary/compounds-1-a/#alkaloids) show enhanced oral bioavailability in ghee matrix compared to aqueous extracts. Crosses blood-brain barrier more effectively in lipid medium.

**Optimal Timing:** On empty stomach in the morning, or as directed by physician

**Shelf Life:** 2 years from date of manufacture as per ASU guidelines for Ghrita preparations

**Storage:** Store in airtight glass or tin-coated containers in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Temperature not exceeding 25°C. Ghrita preparations are sensitive to oxidation.

**Marker Compounds:** [Berberine](/glossary/compounds-a-c/#berberine), [Tinosporaside](/glossary/compounds-t-z/#tinosporaside), [Columbin](/glossary/compounds-c-d/#columbin), 20-beta-hydroxyecdysone, Palmarin

**Quality Parameters:** Acid value (<6), peroxide value (<10), saponification value, [iodine](/glossary/compounds-g-l/#iodine) value, refractive index, rancidity test (Kreis test negative), moisture content (<0.5%), specific gravity, HPTLC for [berberine](/glossary/compounds-a-c/#berberine) and tinosporaside, microbial limits, heavy metals

**Vehicle (Anupana):** Warm water or warm milk
