# Steam Chamber Swedana Box

> Steam Chamber Swedana Box (Sanskrit: Swedana Yantra / Bashpa Swedana Peti) is an instrument used in panchakarma equipment. An enclosed chamber or box in which the patient sits while medicated steam is directed onto the body (with the head kept outside). Includes Nadi Swedana (tubular/localized steam), Bashpa Swedana (full body steam box), and Prastara Swedana (bed-based steaming).

## Where is it described in the classical texts?

Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana Chapter 14; Sushruta Samhita Chikitsasthana Chapter 32. Thirteen types of Swedana are described including Sagni Sweda (with fire) and Niragni Sweda (without fire).

## How is it used traditionally?

Pre-Panchakarma preparation (Purvakarma), muscle relaxation, joint stiffness, pain relief, opening of Srotas (body channels), liquefying Ama (toxins) for elimination.
